God I hate people that can't just enjoy a good movie. I'm talking about the political nutjob above this post

Bingo! These are just movies. The results are simply votes based on taste. There is no wolrd-wide conspiracy for or against either movie. It's just the opnions of the voters.

I think you have missed Mo'niques's acceptance speech. If I'm right, the irony is that you have to have some polictical elements in the movies in order to get nominated into those big categories!

IMO, it's more about movies with messages than politics.

EG last year's nominees:

The Nominees
■The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
■Frost/Nixon
■Milk
■The Reader
■Slumdog Millionaire - Winner

I didn't see any left/right leanings on these (perhaps Milk , ok), but I did see great story-telling.

Slumdog, the winner, was more or less a love story.

Her acceptance speech was not about the politics contained in the movies, it was about the politics of campaigning for Oscars. She had been notable for not doing the expected campaigning. You seem to misinterpret a number of things.

I think I need to read Push. Heard so much about Precious but never saw it.

I enjoyed Avatar's visuals, but has been done so many times; Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves. Maybe it's not a political reason it didn't win Best Picture, maybe the story is the one of criteria factored into the final decision.

I watched The Hurt Locker on a flight to HK. I enjoyed the movie, but I didn't feel it was Oscar winning.

Shows what I know. That's why I'm not on the panel. :)

Personally my favourite movie of this year was Up in the Air. I found it very, very thought provoking, but I think that is because I saw a lot of myself in George Clooney's character.

I think both Hurt Locker and Avatar should have been disqualified in the Oscars because they were being sued for "stealing" people's ideas and it is now an on-going matter!

Avatar made 2.6 billion and Hurt Locker made 18 million ..... wtf is going on. I think they just wanna screw James Cameron this time around. I saw Hurt locker after it won Best Picture to see what so great about it. The movie suck big time and it showed with its box office total. This movie should have gone straight to DVD let alone shown at the theatres.

Should the award really be about which picture made more money?

What's Avatar being sued for? I know what The Hurt Locker is being sued for (kind of bogus, seems like the guy realized he could have made money off his own story after the fame)

What's with all this talk about just these two movies? Avatar was easily the lamest movie out of all ten of the nominated films. Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Precious, A Serious Man, and yes, Hurt Locker, were way better movies. Up in the Air was okay. I didn't see Up. But in my opinion, the most imaginative, creative, clever and best written movie was Inglourious Basterds - you just didn't know where the story was going to go. Quentin got ripped off big time with Best Screenplay and Best Director. In the end, I didn't really care which film got best picture - just as long as that snooze-fest of a movie going by the name of Avatar didn't get it. It was truly boring, predictable and mind-numbingly dumb.

As George C Scott so aptly put it "The [Academy Awards] ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons".

Have not watched for over 30 years to any of these award shows and could care less.

It just proves that a LOT of people have watched it and majority loved it. Not many movies can make this claim. U see any other movies that makes over a billion $ (other than Titanic)? The movie has to be Great otherwise no one would pay to watch it. That is what a Best Picture award is suppose to be ...... people paying their hard earn money to watch that movie.

A lot of people also paid a lot of money to see Transformers II and Pearl Harbour.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from, but I disagree.

Avatar was hyped up from the beginning. New 3D tech to film the movie? I admit, I watched the movie in Imax 3D just because it was supposed to be an eye opening experience.
I knew what the movie plot was about; just doesn't seem like $$$ = Oscar award.

Stealing people's ideas!
What specifically? The tech? the 'Pocahontas' storyline?

aznboi9 "We've got to keep fucking each other till we're all the same colour!"
haha that's good. Totally agree.
