Are Trump's tariff threats making you reevaluate your purchasing/vacation plans?

Personally, I took stock of all things American that I usually consume and researched if there was a non-American alternative.

As well, the California vacation we were considering this year has been nixed and we're going to Mexico instead.

100%. I’m even going to change up my coffee. I usually spend a fair amount at Starbucks and I’m going to stop that cold.

I will make a concerted effort to not buy American products and may just keep it that way. I’d be happy to see Canada increase trade with MANY other countries and for that matter skip the USA and make a solid trade deal with Mexico.

I did a shop on Sunday and the only thing I bought from the US was onions. This tariff threat is a very good opportunity for us to try and become a bit more self sufficient … a sort of "grow, baby, grow" response!!

Nope. I think this whole trade war is bs. Americans are our closest allies and I am not gonna stop supporting them because the leaders of both countries can't get their shit together. I am still buying American and going on trips to America. Our neighbour is going to stay even when Trump is gone in 2029. I agree that we need to diversify our economy and not be solely dependent on US but hey we share the longest land border with them which makes it so much easier to trade.

I barely buy American. Mostly buy Asian products or local if possible. I won't be able to fully buy everything non American. But I'd heavily reduced the amount of American products which I already barely buy. And with Canadian imposed tariffs on American goods, it will cost me more anyways to buy American. So the alternative realistically will be non American for the little American goods that I buy.

I agree it's BS, but Trump supporters are a like a god damn cult. Some of them literally don't even know what tarriffs are...

I sympathize with Canada and am not a Trump supporter.
Should I avoid going to Vancouver in the near future because of the anger or would Canadians be happy I'm spending money in Canada?

If you read a lot of the threads over on Reddit when this question comes up, the consensus is mainly that most people are okay with Americans as long as they're not MAGA types. You'd be fine in Vancouver for the most part. There are, obviously, people who didn't like Americans of any type before this, but how many of them will you run into?

You'd be welcome ! The anger felt by Canadians is directed at trump , his vocal cheerleading squad and his enablers not Americans as a whole....big difference.

Canadians understand that even people who voted for him didn't think that things could go so far so quickly and didn't understand how tariffs work ... even if they were told, warned and schooled about it . I.e. 1930s a recession turned into a depression because of tariffs meant to protect American jobs because of followed retaliatory tariffs from almost every major country on earth ....66% of world trades vanished ....and other examples...

AND you'd get an extra 44% on your dollar...🥴

I’ve always tried to buy BC first, Canada second and try not buy from US or China unless absolutely necessary. It’s a challenge especially with computer or phone accessories from China.

That said one of my kids has a Green Card residing in California and I’m way past due for a visit hopefully this summer.

I'm at that age where I'm downsizing and getting rid of things more so than doing a lot of shopping. I've tried to avoid the Made in China junk in general and will look at labels more closely than previously for Canadian made goods.

I used to rent a little cabin in the San Juans and enjoyed spending time visiting (and shopping) in the small towns. Great people, food, and just a serene place to spend time. It's now over $200 a night US -- on top of which, the US Navy decided to do their take off and landing runs over the place (you have to check listings to see how places are impacted by the noise).

So now I'm just staying home and spending my money on SPs.

Based on my observations on social media over the past few days, along with in-person discussions, I believe that most people, regardless of their political beliefs, do not have a clear understanding of tariffs and their economic implications.
Unfortunately tariffs are regressive in that they hit the poorer people much worse.
