Only reason i wanna sign up with these guys is 25.00 (also can use on lapotp & smartphone) and can have a 2nd phone line(for pooning). How's the data speed/reception with these guys? Probably wont use it for calling much but use lots of internet.

Weak reception in underground places and certain pockets in vancouver. Even weaker when you get out to areas like Surrey and beyond. Although if they keep building towers might improve over time

No the deal is for everybody(confirmed by two mobi stores). This deal has no voicemail or blackberry messenger service. This has unlimited local calling and not throughout north america (like the 40.00 plan). I dont mind cause i wont be using the voicemail and not planning to use blackberry(can add blackberry service & voicemail for 5.00 )

I think that deal is only for students.
I have their $40 plan and got a really great phone for $100.
So far, my reception is decent.
Apparently the $70 one has crap reception.... only one antenna.

Lots of these "new" and smaller companies target their market at students and sps. But, the reception is extremely bad and there are always many drop calls.

I'll stick with the big 3 for calls(just dont trust wind/mobibilicity or any of these small companies). I used wind for data stick service which isnt that bad. Also having a 2nd phone for pooning is nice.

I use Mobilicity and am actually typing this on my Panache phone. Got the $25 back to school plan. I have tried it at PoCo, Port Moody, Coquitlam, Burnaby, Vancouver, North Van, UBC, Richmond etc. Data speed around 1 to 2 MBPS which is slightly faster than Shaw lite speed. I tether lots to my laptop via my phone's WiFi hotspot. Watch YouTube usually on 320 or 480 resolution setting. I do not even subscribe to TELUS or Shaw highspeed anymore.

Weak spot at underground parkade (even when it is only on P1) or basement (such as Metrotown TnT) or centre elevator concrete core of towers.

The $25 is a great deal for personal phone. I carry my work TELUS phone to compliment at areas where Mobilicity is weak.

I have the Wind $29 plan. So far its pretty decent. Of course the reception and speed is not up to big three standards but the price is right. I'm pretty happy with it.

That was the phone i was planning to get. I have the 20.00 lifetime data stick plan with wind mobile right now. I figure id get the 25.00 plan(use it like a data stick) and wait till the mobi network gets better. No real loss since im just using it for data at home and a occasional data on the panache. Still staying with chatr/rogers as my reg phone.

The Panache is a great phone for the not so tech savvy guy. I'm not big into rooting phones so I rather get a phone that works great out of the box. Not sure what speed you get from the data stick and where you live but I ran data speed test at most of the areas I listed above and it is pretty consistent 1 to 2 MBPS. As I said, the main weakness is parkade or basement where my Mobilicity will get no signal or switch to roaming while my Telus will get anywhere between 0 to full bar depending on how many levels down the basement. I don't think I get signal at Metrotown TNT with Telus either (on a BB 9900). Definately get a friend's Mobilicity phone to see if you get good signal in your house or work area if that is where you will be mainly using it. Should be no problem outdoor and I have not encounter any reception issue outdoor in the GVA. I was actually on a boat the other day off Jericho and have full bar reception.

This message was sent from my laptop with tether connection from my phone.

Those are probably the same speeds i get with wind mobile for internet. As for the plan having no voicemail....not a big deal. I dont ever check voicemail messages and prefer not having it. That's what the caller id is for and most people if important would just text me.

Shows how great this new 25.00 plan is. Apparently mobilicity is making next to nothing on this plan.

from the CEO of wind mobile
Lacavera on wireless competition in Canada, specifically the Mobilicity all-in $25/month plan:
“That was in response to our $29. Awesome. Look, obviously the pricing is irrational and not sustainable… It’s insane. We came very aggressive with $29, but they need it. It reeks of desperation”

I've been using mobilicity since April.

So far, I've had no dropped calls. When I use data, I tend to get around 1.5 to 1.8 mbps up and down.

There are problems with periodic data service outages. I find they happen about two to three times a month, and last anywhere from a minute, to a half hour.

There are also problems with data and voice reception in remote areas of the city, underground, and deep inside buildings. I'm pretty sure that these problems are all related to service-node density.

i.e. they're still building out their network, and initially they were looking to cover as wide an area as they could, without focusing on redundant nodes to provide additional reliability.

I say this, because I just got back from a trip across the border, while there, I was roaming on T-Mobile, and found excellent coverage while deep inside buildings, underground and in remote residential areas or in state parks.

(this goes against claims that it has something to do with the frequency that Wind/Mobi is using, that the frequency has some problems with penetrating buildings or working underground. (T-Mobile, Wind and Mobilicity all use the same frequency)

The corollary of this is that, given additional network density, these reception issues can eventually be overcome (something that would be impossible if it had anything to do with the frequency).

So mobilicity's $25 deal reeks of desperation but wind's $29 deal doesn't? Isn't that a really weird thing to say? An attempt to diss your competition and actually really diss yourself at the same time?

Almost every cell phone company has similar prices for their plan. It's not desperation. It's called competitive pricing.

My contract is gonna expire in a few months and I decided to start shopping for a better plan. Bell, Rogers, Telus all have the similar $55 plan

- 1 Gig of data
- 200 Daytime minutes
- Free text msging

It's all the same. I'd say keep lower the prices

The 29.00 wind plan is for a year and then goes up to 45.00. The 25.00 mobilicity plan is forever or however long the cellphone comp operates.

Ya, sure. But it's still not an incredible difference that would make one company desperate but not the other. I just think it's a pretty douchy comment to make and especially when wind's offering a fairly similar deal. Kind of a turn off, IMO, for a CEO to make a comment like that. Maybe it's just me but it certainly doesn't score any points for Wind. Kind of makes me like mobilicity better now. lol

emacky - yeah, i know what you mean, I noticed that too when I was shopping around. It's pretty much the same everywhere (Virgin mobile has similar plans as the other big providers) Personally, I refuse to get trapped into a contract and won't budge. I've been using pay-as-you-go (7eleven's speakout & fido when i was in montreal) for a long time now while considering other options. But now 7eleven seems to be improving (add minutes/pay online, some actual plan options) so I'm likely not to end up going anywhere. The only thing is they only have about 4 phones to choose from - all pretty lame - but since they're on Rogers network, I think I'm just going to buy an unlocked phone elsewhere, choose one I want, then just plop my speakout sim card in and there you go. I can keep the same phone and just switch sim to my fido montreal number when i go visit. Much more convenient..

But yah... 3 year contract? Um, No thanks!!
