I'm looking at getting a Restricted Firearms: Possession & Acquisition license, and wonder if there's anybody here who can tell me what to expect.

Depends on the type of restricted firearm and the need for it.

As I understand it, this is also seperate, of course, from a permit to carry a concealed restricted firearm.

To obtain regular firearms - or ammunition - you need a basic Firearms Aquisition Certificate (F.A.C.)

Damn! I'm liking that! Great info everybody!

Meanwhile, what's people's experience getting one of these, that Spaceghost mentioned?

"permit to carry a concealed restricted firearm."

Is that the same as the conceal and carry permits in the US?

IIRC, you need to prove you have a contract out on your life to get a concealed carry permit. I heard there are about 10 people in Canada with that kind of permit.
freddy and vanman do not exaggerate Ophelia.

If you are looking to get a permit to keep a gun severly locked up somewhere with highly restrictive permits on when and where you can take it somewhere while it is completely locked up and rendered unusable (i.e. gun range)... that can be done.

If you are looking for permits to be able to carry a concealed weapon - or permits that would allow you to have a loaded gun around your apt ready to use when need be... it won't happen.

Basically the mulitute of gun rules are there so that if the cops in Canada ever catch someone with a gun, they can arrest them and throw them in jail on the spot for that reason alone. It doesn't even matter if the gun is loaded.

Should someone break into your apt, and you use that gun on him... you are actually in greater sh*t than the intruder, believe it or not.

Restricted in this sense refers to handguns. Prohibited handguns are those that have barrel lengths less than or equal to 105mm, .25 or .32 calibre. So I guess no mouse guns, snub noses, or Saturday night specials.

As many have pointed out, there is no carry conceal option in Canada, unlike the US.

Essentially, I suppose, you have to decide, at any given time, if the risk of personal injury will overide your risk of criminal charges.

I grew up around guns - your standard bush arsenal of 30-30 and .22 in the vehicle gunrack, and a collection of nasty things like crossbows, a sawed-off and and some variation of an ArmaLite M-15 at home.

I respect guns and what they can do.

Guns don't kill people; guns with people pulling the triggers kill people.

"What a gun can do is use a small chemical explosion to fire a projectile with great speed. And that is about it."

Yeah...sure...and what's pistol whipping, huh? Chopped liver?

"A gun will not build a house, or tend a garden."

I can't even remember how many times me and little sis took the guns a-plantin'! Why first I'd strafe the fresh spring dirt with the Gatling gun to get it all tilled and such, she'd drag the rifle along by the barrel to get me a nice furrow going, and then I'd whip out my Colt .45 and every three inches - green beans need a bit of space - bust some caps into that furrow's ass!

Damn! I miss those green beans!

I know guns aren't the answer to everything - but then again, what is?

"permit to carry a concealed restricted firearm."
That's potentially a little more complication and will attract attention - forms to fill out, interviews to attend, justification to conceal to be provided - and if you have a record of any type - forget it...

The key will be the reason you provide to carry a restricted firearm.
