Really enjoyed his travels and cooking experiences, seemed like the perfect job and lifestyle and he has inspired me to look off the beaten path. Got plenty of that on a recent trip to Cuba simple things with down to earth people, very hard to beat, RIP!

I just don’t get it.
They were both super successful and rich.
Money don't buy you happiness.

If you dig a bit, Anthony had a history of depression.

Everyone knows money doesnt buy happiness. The richer you are the more work and business you have to tend. The richer you r, the more you are in debt. Even donald trump once looked at a homeless peraon and turned to ivanka n said that guys richer than me. How so? Well he wasnt in 900 million debt.
The less u have, the less u spend.

Rothschild family ancestor Nathan was notioriously miserable. Claimed me happy? HA.
..... money serves a need to get on in the World.

The most VALUABLE THING IS TIME

A fine human being, who helped to show viewers the human side of countries that are commonly portrayed negatively by the media (e.g. Iran, Colombia, Vietnam). When he went somewhere, he was showing us the culture without an air of racial superiority. The real, authentic life of humans just like you and me.

He was an inspiration to many of those who would have never otherwise stepped out of their travel/culinary comfort zones. On Twitter today - "Anthony Bourdain had one of the only shows on tv that tried with all its might to teach Americans not to be scared of other people."

People are saying "How could someone with everything going for him like THAT be depressed enough to want to end his life?" People don't kill themselves because they want to end their lives: they want to end their pain. Depression doesn't care about your bank balance, your Nielson ratings, or how many books you sell. Kate Spade was terrified about anyone finding out about her diagnosis because of what it might do to her "brand". You just can't imagine what it is like to be in psychic agony, day after day, unless you live with it. Many people keep it all locked away until they just CANNOT stand it anymore. Medications only do so much. I am having a hard time with this one. I really loved his show, & his passion for what he did, & I can imagine from what I saw & read Of him, that when the Black Dog howled, there were nightmarish thoughts in his head...I hope he can rest easy.

I found this article on Reuters discussing depression and medications. Turns out insurers are not keen to fund new research on anti depressants. 140 new drugs with 39 awaiting trials for lack of funding. Mental Health is apparently not popular these days.

Meanwhile suicide rates have jumped 30% in 20 years.

Not sure if Bourdain was on medication but one thing that jumped out is the negative effect of consuming large amounts of alcoholic with antidepressants. Toxic and dangerous mix.

We don't need more new drugs that get pushed through the FDA despite reports of permanent negative side effects. We need better & more immediate access to appropriate treatment & early intervention.

BBB I have had two friends kill themselves who were fine on medication.
In both cases they went out with "friends" and ended up drinking, then died.

Medication does work wonders but it has to be very tightly controlled.

Anyone who suffers should get help. Don't feel embarrased or ashamed.

Most of the drugs available now were designed in 1990's for substance control addictions to nicotine etc. New drugs = new research.

There has also been an uptick in ECT for long term depression where the existing drugs are no longer of any consequence to the patient. So IMO the newly researched drugs should be given a chance. IF you could see a Dr in Psych the waiting list is very long other than going into Emergency.

Agree on all points. People must remember the drugs are a bandaid at best.

Alcohol is a depressant and could be lethal with meds.

The suicides of Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade this week are a reminder: No matter how successful, wealthy or seemingly happy you are, we all battle our own demons.
And Avicii. Being adored by the masses isn't a measure for happiness either.

I don't think people really care much, with the population of the planet growing day by day, suicides probably aren't a big worry to most people. It's not like we have a shortage of people.

It makes a big difference if you care about someone and love them.
It is devastating.

If you don't care about anyone and nobody cares about you then it looks different.
