New Brunswick village removes 'straight pride' flag amid backlash

My opinion: (a) anyone who thinks we need a straight pride flag is missing the whole point of the others, (b) those that created the flag had less naive/benign intent behind it than the people in the article claim.

As a straight person, personally I have no need for a flag nor do I begrudge the LGBTQ etc. community theirs.

But judging by the comments on the article, most don't share my opinion on that.

(Though the Trans Flag confuses me: I thought the T in LGBTQ and hence the rainbow flag covered that already?)

Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous...double standard . Gay pride -awesome, black pride -awesome, straight pride- bad, white pride- nazis!
When is it going to end? Equality? Hah! Everybody is allowed freedom ,unless you have the misfortune of being caucasian and hetero. Perhaps we need to add a new "gender" to the more than 50 recognized ones--a straight person born white who feels like a gay ethnic person!

What's the message behind a straight pride flag? Behind white pride? You think people forgot we exist? You think people need to be reminded that we deserve to live our lives without fear of violence for being who we are? That we are being denied fundamental liberties that others take for granted? Do you ever wish you could switch places?

Have you ever had to go to the ER? They see patients in order of severity, not in the order they arrived. Straight pride flags and white pride, at best, is the guy with the stubbed toe complaining that the guy just brought in who's bleeding out is being seen ahead of him.

I think your missing a few letters and numbers in lgbtq
I think there is a two and a plus

and I think that is the point,
they have to keep adding things because native women feel left out people of color feel left out, and they keep finding new versions of sexuality
and im missing a letter in two and plus, there is another one.

to be honest its a bit ridicules

you just get tired of it.

LGBTQ2IA+

So you're saying the message of a straight flag (for some anyway) is parody/mockery by people who just think it's all ridiculous and don't see any point to it? That I'll believe.

But just because you don't see the point doesn't mean there isn't one.

"Feeling left out" is in some way the message, but not in the "hey, notice me!" sort of way. It's feeling left out in terms of safety and rights that are afforded to unthreatened majorities.

I think a big reason people object to something like a straight pride flag is that it trivialises and neglects to acknowledge the true suffering that led to the need for the other flags' creation, and instead pretends that the only message is "hey, notice me!" It's not.

Sitting at the head of the table, getting served first with the best selection and choicest cuts, is the King
As the rest of the table gets served in order of "importance" it goes on and on and selection and quality diminishes
Way, way down at the far end, a hand goes up and a small voice cries- "Don't forget about me..."
That's the flag being raised.
And no need for the King to be specifically recognized with a fresh banner at his chair- it's quite obvious who's first in line.

yes and also i have seen plenty of Natives in Vancouver with "Native Pride" hats and t-shirts. And as a side note. In The Star (vancouver paper) yesterday there was a story about the recent city election. They complained that the folks voted in were too white. They said there was no representation
from other races of Vancouver. As far as i could see there were plenty of non white people running. So only the white folks running getting voted in is racist? I really hate this race card bs. I honestly do not see colour. The best PEOPLE get the job. Do not care or notice what race they are.

Never heard of a Straight Pride Flag. When people had these little rainbow stickers on their cars, I'd just thought it was a picture of a rainbow. So one day I asked, and someone told me it was a symbol for gay people. OK, so get on with your life.
You should remember that your own prejudices are not the same as other people's prejudices.

if you think white people are the king,

not sure what world you live in,
maybe, that says something about our work or life experience,

im a minority in my community and at work.

just had a meeting at work the other day as a matter of fact,
and many people find our work place not a friendly environment.
not a friendly environment at all,,
people of a visible minority claiming racism and having filed complaints to that effect,

the whites the few of us that there are, don't feel comfortable,
for a lot of reasons, no one speaks English,
if you say boo your a racist,
no one feels comfortable in our work place,

this multi cultural society is not at all that friendly

I hear what your saying in the lgbt community,
they needed a movement. yeah I agree,

but at the same time I think the pendulum has swung to far,

and I don't know how any one who has paid for an escort,
cannot feel left out, or how much of hypocrite society is
were so much about sexuality and the right to your sexuality etc etc etc,
but im 65 years old my sp is mature in her early fifties, I have known her for a dozen years.
but if I get together with her and pay her money, im breaking a law.

think about that,
kids in school have gay straight alliance, they can be trans gendered and gender confused, and receive all kinds of support.
there so young they don't know fuck about anything
but me I have lived and figured it out as much as im ever going to,
can't legally pay for sex. someone I have known for a dozen years.
but some little shit, who doesn't know shit, has all the support of those social doo gooders.
doesn't it just piss you off that what we do is illegal with all this other stuff going on.

I wish society would stop being a bunch of hypocrites and get real

and you know what it is going to come down to one day,

its already starting,
no one will be allowed anything outside there home or there place of worship.

several jurisdictions are beginning legislation to that effect. no signs of anything allowed, in the work place
banning any religious symbols actually in society in public as well banning religious garments
that is where society is going

that shows how well we like each other and get along.

like I said my work place is beginning to be a toxic environment

you understand why the world is in such a mess.
in our cafeteria the Chinese sit there the hindus sit there the muslims sit there the siks sit here blacks sit here,
no one mixes and the few whites there are run for the exits

I dunno

It is my firm belief that anyone who thinks the "pendulum has swung too far the other way" does not have an informed understanding of what vulnerable people in our society had and have to endure.

How often do you wish you could trade lives with them?

By the way, I'm white and I've never personally been accused of being a racist in my life. Not really understanding how it could be so hard to avoid?

Time and place, my friend, and you can't control what others perceive or say.
I got called homophobic on numerous occasions when I slung drinks in a gay bar- simply because I treated the patrons the same as I would in the straight bars I tended. And customers of colour or visible minority? I was accused of being racist as well. And not just by drunks- by anyone who might be "offended" for having to wait or didn't approve of how I moved the line through. If anything, accuse me of preferring to first serve those who would tip better. THAT I will acknowledge and accept.

My cynical opinion: This struggle isn't science, it's politics. For every ideology, there is a counter ideology. Attack, counter-attack, counter-counter-attack etc.
Equality is not their real goal, though they like to use the language of it - both sides want to define what other people should be and send their opponents to the gender guillotine.

Zippy.....NO, you are not a racist. Say what the hell you like.
This after all is a free country with the still "what it seems"
not so popular ability to use free speech, and it's not run by Stalin or Hitler.

There just seems to be a movement that would make it seem that way
and has been happening for about 3 decades or so now.

And there in lies all the trouble, the beginning of "political correctness".
At one time a fashion statement to be able to "fit" in.
Now...... a bunch of crapola that needs to be eradicated, and like that will ever happen.
WOW!! It sure has fixed things hasn't it. Yah......in a pigs eye.
All I've seen it do is create more distance between peoples than ever
before as now it gives them an EXCUSE to call you a racist and get away
with it. As ddcanz said he was accused of being as he said above.

Phobia this and gender that..........who fucking cares!!!
Good god get on with life and you gender delinquents quit whining that
you aren't accepted or whatever your trouble is. Grow a pair and get on
with what is important in life and not make everyone else responsible for
what you say has caused your lack of confidence in yourself.

Hey you know what? I may have offended someone here by what I just posted,
but I don't give a shit cuz I'm sick to death of being told what I can say and
what I can't with all the gentrification of political correctness.
Sooooo, go cry in Trudeau's lap and tell him some whitey offended you.
Maybe he will cry a river of tears with you and teach you more on
how dramatic to be to garner even more attention.

Geeeeeez.
And that's my .02 rant for tonite.
Hmmm, straight pride flag? Maybe that should be up there as well
along with the gay pride flags just to show ALL people are equal.

partly my perspective on live,
I had a miserable dysfunctional up bringing dad in and out of jail

im not anything special, ok
but I have worked all my life, still working even though I could be retired.
only thing I have ever did wrong in my life is see escorts.

I had opportunities for things,, I mean kids were drug dealers in school, a buddy he brother was older, we were in junior high,
but he was helping his brother deal drugs.
I had easy access to drugs. and that life style.
but I chose different.

some one said, in a football life,
he had a rough life on the streets in l.a. ok,
and he said there is always an opportunity to turn your life around,
you have to make the right choice,
when the opportunity is there, you have to have the courage to take it.

so I don't believe that poor me,
people had a lot worse lives then me made it,

it is a matter of choice, free will

if it isn't a matter of free will then whats the point of anything
