You are right I'm not saying the whole story . It is of course unhealthy to be 450 lb but they presented with no health condition what so ever . I have met under 130 lb woman with horrible health conditions related to an eating disorder . Teeth falling out , skin peeling hair loss eye sight loss, heart attack, depression , suicide . Fat is not the only issue people are unhealthy it's the disordered eating that kills . The only way out of these problems long term is changing a persons whole life and relationship with food . It's a complicated issue and it requires sensitivity .
It's really a weak argument you are making when you compare a fat person to a thin person who has an eating disorder and whose teeth are falling out, etc. Just because an obese person (450 lbs!) does not present any health problems is hardly any sign that this person is healthy. In fact, one look at the weight and any reasonable person would conclude that this person is very unhealthy and that there are present health problems and certainly future health problems as a result of all that excess fat.

The natural human body's body fat percentage - for women - on average and to be healthy is just under 30%.
A 450 lb woman is maybe 300% fat. How on earth could that be healthy no matter what she presents.

Lastly, it is a complicated issue. Yes, it requires sensitivity to deal with it in a constructive manner. I am not a doctor, so I don't have to deal with it constructively in the sense of helping the patient lose weight. I have the freedom to not be sensitive about it, and I don't take it for granted. But one thing for sure, being sensitive to the point of lying about the health effects of fat is destructive. Wistfully calling a fat person "rubinesque" and other cute words is not encouraging them to get on it and do something about it. It's a critical health issue as far as I'm concerned. If you are deeply overweight to the point of obesity, you need to do something about it right away and be brave and stop worrying about being emotionally hurt when your life is at stake.

I am so surprised that anyone would even quote Andy Rooney. After the three news segments were over, I always changed the channel since Rooney was just plain boring. I notice they haven't replaced him yet on 60 minutes and basically have 8 minutes of Cialis and Levitra ads running until 8 PM.

I learned from a pretty early age that women 35+ are where it is that. What they may have lost in terms of looks, they make up for in terms of experience, intelligence, demeanor and understanding. It is true that women have their issues at every age and your physical age is not always an indicator of maturity but it is more likely for a woman to have their shit together at 40 than it is at 25. I can also tell you that my best experiences with SPs were with women 35 and over. When I was 21 I started seeing a 40 year old I used to work with. Opened up my world I can tell you.

I'm going to give you a sports analogy here to illustrate this point. Ive always said that physical beauty is like talent in sport. When you see it , it is undeniable. However, as we have seen in the past, being a great talent doesn't always equate to success, in either team or individual sports, nor does being beautiful mean you will get a date. Take someone like Steve Yzerman. in 1989 he scored 155 points for the Red wings and was the Pearson (now Ted Lindsay). Still, he was unable to get his team out of the first round. Fast forward to 1998 where Steve Yzerman, though still a talent, had slowed a little bit. Acknowledging this, he adjusted his game to become a more complete player. that year he won the Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe and the Selke. As a player, his highest level of desirability came in the second half of his career as opposed to his first because by this time he knew what he needed to do to win. I think young women, like a lot of athletes, coast on their talent (looks)and for whatever reason, don't try to become deep and diverse people because they feel they don't have to be. By the time they hit their 30s, they (hopefully) start to see the light.

Wrong. The heavier a body the higher the muscle mass, for the same reason that people in space lose muscle mass....plus, the heavier the person the stronger the bones, given that said person is not sedentary.

"...Compared to normal-weight adults, overweight and obese persons have not only greater bone mineral density (BMD), but they lose bone at a slower pace, and may even have a reduced risk of fragility fractures [1, 2]. .."

Oh OK you win. The person in the image below is probably in the neighborhood of 450 lbs. According to you, it's the picture of health.

One thing I realized is that you can never have a constructive discussion with these kinds of people:
1) the insane
2) those who have a personal vested interest in the topic and who can't be objective about it because it somehow reflects on them

So yeah OK whatever you say. That person has a high muscle mass and strong bones because she has to carry all that weight, and she is supposed to be the picture of health. Next you'll probably tell me she is as sexy as a female her height but 160 lbs. Yeah, I understand how you think.

BACK TO THE ORIGINAL THREAD subject.

Andy Rooney was a perpetual star on a very major weekly news feature SIXTY MINUTES. So many notable journalists earned their journalistic spurs on CBS's Sixty Minutes. Stars still twinkle in my journalistic heavens!!!
