*raises hand* Prarie/Redneck woman here :D

A few of my favorite songs are old-timers like Willie Nelson, Johnny cash, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, Chris LeDoux etc. A few other good ones are of course Garth Brooks (nearly every song he did), John Michael Montgomery (Grundy County Auction, be my baby tonight), Alabama, The Mavericks, Toby Keith (who's your daddy, etc), Gretchen Wilson and her famous song "Red Necked Woman", Keith Urban, Clint Black....ohhh there's too much to choose from!! :p

Hey 50, rumor has it some people are ragging on you for, on one occasion, declining an opportunity to sleep with a woman. You seem to be as good natured as anyone possibly could be about it. Just remember, the ability to make that decision is one of the things that separates men from the dogs in the back alley.

There is a lot of great stuff from the "golden age of nashville". columbia had an awesome 5 disc collection -- if you want hear the golden age and its sound find "my elusive dreams". Look for some George Jones, Skeeter Davis, Ray Price "the nite time ain't no good life, but it's my life" -- which should be the unofficial anthem for womanizing drunkards who know they're going downhill.

Then look at the outlaws, the guys who didn't fit in -- waylon, willie, merle -- look especially at Merle Haggard. IMHO at the end of the day he will be seen as just as significant a player as Cash -- his "if I could only fly" is one the GREAT american records.

Contemporary look for Wayne the Train Hancock -- really hard to find but "that's what daddy wants" is one of the bestest things a man could own. Even though Dwight is a California cowboy a lot of his stuff kicks ass. Hank III is a bit of a "cowpunk" but his most recent album is great. the first two -- he's kinda trading on his daddy and grand-daddy's names. speaking of "cowpunk" (the precurser to this whole alt-country thang -- which is best sampled by buying all "bloodshot records" compilations) find "rank and files" first two discs. From there go and discover the genius of Alehandro Escovedo.

But before them all there is Hank. The best white blues man ever. Buy everything by Hank Williams.

I'm a prairie guy who hates most C&W music, but I think an addition to the list should be "Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Charlie Daniels.

Well since I concur with Steve Earles assessment that Shania Twain ain't nothin' but a high priced lap dancer and the songs you seem to like are at best "nu-country" I'd suggest you just go watch some CMT and knock yourself out with the latest from the blow dried girly boys.

Travis Tritt did an awesome cover of The Eagles 'Take it Easy'. That was the song that got me interested in country.
Also from Tritt, 'Foolish Pride'.

Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, all good examples of 'new country'.

K, I'm not proud of this, but i occasionally listen to country music(~hangs head in shame~), and thought i'd burn a CD for that "once in a blue moon" occasion.

What are some good backwards ass country songs?

Im thinkin' of that you and me go fishin in the dark kinda stuff...or maybe that uhhm, chattahoochie mama song

what are some of the other songs i can burn?

If you listen to too much country music you become a REPUBLICAN!

My advice is go for the pop/folk music stuff like Stompin' Tom Connors or Stan Rogers.

Aside from Johnny Cash, Stan Rogers, John Denver, Willie Nelson and the like, I consider the only real country music to be Bluegrass.

Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, et al, are just a bunch of poser pussies.

I really like the new country. Keith Urban, Rascall Flats, Aaron Pritchett, Chely Wright, Carolyn Dawn Johnson. I listened to Waylon & Willie and the boys growing up. Check out JRFM to find out what's new. The other thing I used to do it stick a tape in the VCR & record 8 hrs of CMT, so I could fast forward through what I didn't like, and watch what I did like. Here's some great driving tunes:
