Does anyone know if a neoprene belly belt, worn while exercising will do anything to reduce belly fat?

I have used one a couple of times and it is wringing wet after, but is losing water actually cutting down on the tummy in the middle?

Anyone know about these? They are about ten inches wide and velcro around the mid section.

Any logic or science behind it?

Seriously man??? This is the problem with people today. Everybody is looking for a quick fix. Get rich quick, add 10lbs of muscle in 2 weeks, add 2 inches to your dick overnight and so forth. none of these scenarios are plausible except in extremely rare cases. For the most part, if you want any of the above, you need to work hard. There are no shortcuts or miracles. If you actually believe that wearing a belt is going to make you shed pounds of belly fat, then you are just a sorrrrrrrry human being. I suggest you take care of your diet and start lifting some weights before you start seeing any improvements.

What you say is true, but you don't have to be a dick about it when saying it.

Sorry man but you don't sweat off fat.
The only way to burn fat is through good old cardio exercise and eating right. Depending on the shape your in now, start with some cardio including bursts. These are 20 to 30 second intervals during your cardio where you go as hard as you can.
Then throw in some weight lifting excercises to tone and build muscle. Initially start with some exercises using light weight to ready your muscles and develope proper form. Muscle burns calories even when you sleep so the more muscle mass you have the better as well. Initially concentrate on the large muscle groups such as chest, legs, and back. Do compound exercises like bench press, military press, bent over or seated rowing, squats, lunges, dead lifts, etc to work no only the larger muscle groups but also the smaller ones like biceps and triceps. Don't worry about doing isolation exercises on things like calves, biceps, triceps, deltoids, ets. These are smaller muscle groups and don't burn alot of energy and like I just said you will work them along with the larger groups. Lift heavy, short reps (6-8) and rest 2 minutes between sets so your muscles can regroup for maximum effort.
Last bit of advice. Instead of spending money on gadgets, spend it hiring a reputable trainer. They'll keep you motivated and on the right track.

Cheers

I'll come at this one from a different angle, I speak from some experience, I have lost a lot of weight in the past 5 months ( approaching triple digits! )

You can exercise all you want, but if you don't eat properly you won't lose weight, here's how I have suceeded so fear.

1.) No junk food ( NONE! )
2.) I drink lots of water, 2+ litres per day, I drink nothing else
3.) Small portions of meat, no more than 4-6 ounces
4.) More vegis than you can imagine, Broccoli, Carrots, Brussel Sprouts, Cucumber, Cauliflower, eat lots of it, eat it all the time
6.) Eat 6-8 times a day
7.) 2-3 Pieces of fruit per day
8.) no bread, very little rice, and very little pasta
9.) NO JUNK, EVER!

if you can do that you will lose your belly fat, walking is enough exercise, I ride my bike, and do weights three times a week, but if you do not have your eating under control then you'll just be a healthy chubby guy!

All a neoprene wrap does is compress the body fat and squezze out tissue fluid (lymph) to attain a certain shape, just like applying pressure to a piece of clay will mold it's form. The problem is the body is not a piece of clay but more like a piece of sponge and the shape will soon return to its initial form once you remove the pressure.
You can take your finger and press it against any part of your body and leave a dimple becsue you are compressing the tissue by squeezing out the lymph but if you remove the pressure the dimple will go away in a minute or 2 as the lymph refills the tissue and the fat re-expands.

Excellent additional advice.
As for walking, while I'd never advise against it, for most people walking is not enough. Ever wonder why you sometimes see the same people at the gym on the treadmill every day for months and they never seem to look any different? Depending on the aount of weight you want to lose or the end result you are looking for, you're going to need to incorporate some high intesity cardio (which doesn't mean high intensity on your joints by the way) wth bursts.
And don't forget good old swimming. Still one of the best overall exercises. Even if you can't swim you can get a waist belt to help keep you buoyant and swim a few laps.
And work on your core. Sure you can do some sit ups but contrary to waht they want you to believe, none of those folks in tha ads got their 6 packs from doing lots of sit ups. There are some great core exercises out there which will do way more for you than sit ups and are alot easier on your back.

Cheers

For the record - I'm not looking for any quick fix or gimmick.

I had the neoprene belt from somewhere and used it WHILE WORKING OUT. I noticed how much I sweated under it and it seemed like the same principle behind losing weight by sweating - it really isn't weight loss, just water loss, but I just thought I'd ask if there might be anything more to it.

I exercise a fair amount and ride my bicycle and hike. I also eat a healthy diet, low fat, mostly vegetarian, maybe 10% fish & some meat.

Thanks for the useable advice.

Listen to him when it comes to weight loss. This Christian Bale guy knows his stuff. The dude lost 63lbs for his role in the machinist. He looked like death though.

I'd rather be a fat fuck than deny myself the pleasures in life... :)
Here, here. If I knew how, I'd give you a thumbs up or something.

Besides, I've seen girls ignore the super strict fitness heads for the laid back soft dudes! Some girls don't want all those boundaries either y'know!

Ab wheel?

How was P90x? I've contemplated trying it...
P90X is a very good program especially if you're like me and have a hard time getting to a gym and want to work out at home. It provides good instruction and makes working out, even by yourself, fun.
It is very good for cardio and weight loss. It is also decent for strength training but not really a mass building program. But that's fine for 95% of the general public.
Before you buy the series though, I'd recommend seeing if there was somebody you could borrow a few of the DVD's from and try it. Not every exercise program is for everyone and it's a lot of $$ to spend on something you may not like. If I was in Vancouver I'd lend you mine.

And you and I have to be on the same healthcare plan...great! :thumb:
Why torture myself every day, and deny myself the things I love, because of what society thinks I should look like? I am perfectly happy with how I look, I love what I eat, and I do exactly what I want to do...

And I am perfectly healthy, from what my doctor tells me....

It isn't just about what you look like. What is going on inside your body is much more important and that is usually reflected by how we look. There is nothing wrong with self control my friend. And that does not just apply to our eating and exercise habits.

We're all going to die anyways, I never saw the point of starving myself just so other people can tell me what to eat & what not to eat....

Who the fuck told you to starve yourself?

There's a difference between pigging out on fast food and just eating healthy proportions and good food. Anybody who is fat is eating the wrong things or too much.

You also have to be aware of what you're eating - the blueberry industry touts the anti-oxidants and health benefits of blueberries, but when tested blueberries come out as THE most toxic berries for residual pesticides and herbicides. It's literally a toxic cocktail, not counting the groundwater pollution intensive farming produces.

Organic, or non-spray berries might be healthy, but most of the ones available are full of sprays.
