An interesting story that finally made the news in Canada in the last few day. (story is from the US).
The 80,000 pennies were the last child support payment of the man for his daughter.
Obviously there is more to the story.

Payments in coins are only good up to a certain amount and its not that much. Legal tender laws in various countries set the rules. So without looking up which country this deadbeat dad is in, the 80,000 pennies is more than likely not legal tender ie $800, and that payment is void.

A number of years ago there was a playoff hockey pool at work and the guy that won did so by having a number of lucky picks for players. The amount was 200 dollars and as a joke he got his winnings in pennies inside a piece of 6 inch pipe with caps welded on the ends.
The local paper came by and took a picture of him standing with his piece of pipe full of pennies. We supplied him with a pipe cutter to get the pennies out.

One wonders where the guy got the 80,000 pennies. I doubt that a person could just walk into a bank and ask for $800 in pennies. Did he save them up over his daughter's lifetime in order to do this dick move? Did he buy them from a government stockpile somewhere?

Confession: I couldn't be bothered reading the article, so if the source of the pennies is explained in the article, my questions are answered.

What town was this in? I always laugh at some of the stuff small community newspapers will report.

What a petty dick move. Here's my thing with idiots like this,I get it if you don't want kids and hey it's " nice" to raw dog it with your girlfriend once you're in a relationship but in doing that you run the risk of getting her pregnant and all the responsibility that goes with it. And as my daddy always use to say, there's always consequences for one's actions. So if you don't want that responsibility, wrap that shit up ,get a vasectomy and you won't have to be a dick 18 years later. End of rant.

Yes it is a dickhead move.

But the guy obviously felt slighted somehow.

I am sure there is a reason for him to be:

Bitter and twisted.....

I have to wonder how the mother could afford to give all the pennies to a charity? That is like saying, I don't need your money?

So why was he paying child support in the first place?

Yah I admit pulling the same stunt .............

back in Grade 9.

Me and my friends thought it was pretty funny considering the VP was a dick.

Will a bank even accept a deposit of 80000 in pennies these days? Last time I tried I was sent to a Safeway with a change machine that took a % of my deposit.

In all fairness, take them in for scrap. You'll probably get more than $800.:)
Well maybe, if pennies are made from copper, but I don't think they're copper anymore, are they? For that matter, I don't think Canada even makes pennies these days.

If I am not mistaken, it is illegal to melt down coins and sell the raw metal for cash.

But I am sure it can be done "under the table".

Also, older pennies are pure copper, but I think the newer ones are copper plated zinc.

I meant it as a joke. I don't think pennies are even currency in Canada anymore. Has anyone tried to use them lately? I don't even think banks take them.
