Call me crazy (you wouldn't be the first), but why is spending hundreds of millions of dollars the only solution to the Patullo Bridge? The bridge was built when a lot of vehicles were much bigger and had no saftey features. The volume of traffic has increased but the main problems (what else is new) are the insane antics of drivers on the bridge and the high speeds. NOBODY does the speed limit on that bridge. Why not install photo cameras along the bridge (and the tunnel and causeway and other bridges) in both directions, put up big signs announcing the cameras and let the traffic calm down. Majority of problems solved for a few hundred thousand. Also read a proposal to put in speed bumps, but that would be even more dangerous.

Not really. The designers of that bridge or Portmann as well were too short sighted. Same as other government projects in Vancouver, the planners had very conservative growth projection about the last 30 to 50 years. It is time for a change!

Not until many accidents are happening, then the government is awaken something has to be done. This is the case to Patullo Bridge. It is long overdue to redesign that bridge for the next 50 years!

The other problem with the Patullo is the lane widths are too narrow. They need to remove truck traffic from the bridge and change the current configuration from two lanes in either direction to 1 lane in either direction plus a third counterflow lane, the same configuration as what they have for the Lion's Gate Bridge.

I'd have to agree with the photo cameras. Heading south off the bridge you immediately hit a 50k zone, this is fukkin slow. Pretty much everybody does 60-80. BUT you stick a speed trap in that little cubby hole off to the left and you see everybody chill right out to 50k.

I think it's not a case of safety it's more a case of I don't wanna get dinged with a hundred dollar fine + plus look like a retard that can't even see the cops 200 feet ahead of them and look like a retard for gettin pulled over.

My nephew (no fault of his own) died on that bridge about 8 years ago along with some of his close friends.

Patullo bridge is just to narrow. It was poorly designed and needs to be replaced, or if its feasable upgrade. If the option is to upgrade then you can start by widening the bridge like they did on the Lions Gate, and eliminate the curve thats in the bridge. Most of the accidents occur at the point of the curve.

Before any changes occur slowing down would surely cut down on some of the deaths we are seeing.

Everytime i hear about improvements needed in the Greater Vancouver area and the amount of money needed to make changes i think of the Fast Cat Ferry fiasco. Billions spent on boats, for what? It just pisses me off to know end. I would like to throttle those involved.

And don't forget the multi millions being wasted on The Sea To Sky Highway, perhaps one of the safest and best-designed highways in the province that is known as a killer highway because of moronic drivers. ...Oh, I forgot - it needs to be improved for 2010, even though Turin got by just fine with two-lane mountain roads.

The Patullo is likely to fall down in the event of an earthquake, and the more they look into it, they will find that they can spend a lot of money, but the bridge just won't take the weight. They need to get the big trucks off the bridge, get people to stick to their lanes, and further reduce speeds, and think about replacing that bridge.
