This is one of those behavioral ecinomics things: leave a loophole and after a while every company has to exploit it to remain competitive. Its why im so against self-regulation for industries, its basically a race to the bottom. Finance guys need to be next for regs after real-estate bros, they're shady as fuck.
What is this self regulation you speak of?
Canada and the US are two of the most regulated countries in the world.
It's true that lack of regulation helped create the mortgage crises in the US but have you ever tried to start a mine or build a pipeline in Canada.
It's next to impossible.
Why?
Regulations.
Because the precedessors of current co's polluted the fuck outta everything and left the goverment the bill. Look up orphan wells.
