This is leading to speculation that the Liberal candidate will be Mark Carney.....a big supporter of digital IDs and the suspected heir to the throne once Justin Trudeau steps down which may be soon if this is correct. We saw what the government was able to do with the truckers, shutting down their bank accounts and access to any sources of funds or many key services. This just makes it much easier to do and has other serious applications.

I remember in the 1960’s we were taught in schools about the coming population explosion and we should make the effort to only reproduce ourselves, 2 kids per family to give us a chance for a successful future. Somehow this went out the window, guess it was bad for business, Climate change is most definitely affected by population growth. You would think an advanced country like Canada could get a handle on this but we seem to have a stuck throttle, a more moderate immigration program would seem logical. I see immigration consulting offices on every corner on some blocks, this has become a huge industry, how much of this money is greasing the skids to keep the doors flung open.

yes, this is exactly the case. And yes all talk of it got wrongly kicked to the curb, fell out of fashion, or whatever.
The energy crisis, the water crisis & food crisis, the carbon emissions & climate change crisis. All of that is definitely explained by the fact that earth's human population is 8 times larger than it was when the industrial age began, while the ecosystem can't get any bigger.

We can make great strides in having & using energy without carbon emissions, but the demand for energy is still going to be there after that. We still need water, still need food, still need housing - that means we need more and more land for supplying all that , and the world is not getting any bigger.

The developed world developed to the point where there was no longer the economic imperative to breed like rats, plus thanks to hygeine, medicine, nutrition, people live longer - but thanks to that and birth control we just naturally breed less. What the world no lobger has in this century is TIME for the process to just play out in places like Asia and Africa. The world is at 8 billion people already, and the fact it is still rising is completely insane.

Paradoxical, but not surprising side issue: The ones who complain the most about migration from the underdeveloped nations are the same people who oppose women's rights, contraception and abortion here - racialists with their "replacement theory", and "pro-life" religious nuts who still think women have no inherent right to not breed. They won't lift a finger to stop the causes of such global overpopulation, but then they cry about the results.

If they really wanted something done, they would be cheering contraception and pushing that out into the world as much as possible. Instead their movement seems to want to return us to the same backwards superstitious thinking that is still going on in the undeveloped countries, that says population is some kind of contest and breeding can help you win it. Tap on the shoulder, suckers - automation & AI mean that game is over, it it was ever real at all.

Its a first world problem. People in the rest of the world including major polluters China and India and in Africa couldn't care less about it and I believe China doesn't have to opt in for 10 years by agreement...if they even honor it. Much of the rest of the world is too busy trying to survive day to day. With the extreme inflation, high cost of housing food and gas it appears that Canadians will soon be in the same position....in fact many are already with record numbers lined up at the food bank. Expecting Justin or Jaggy to care about that is a lost cause. Jaggy's main concern is hanging on and collecting his pension.

Back in 2011 I explained in French to a Paris hostel clerk in the kindest terms I could think of for my fellow Canadians. Living the life of infants. And FYI, debt-to-GDP is NOT (as you put it) "the measure of the real value of Canada's debt". The debt is what the debt is. If my credit card is maxed at $20,000, the debt is $20,000.

Just getting a chance to respond to you now. I don't have the time to get into everything, but on this point, read up on real vs nominal value. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. If I took out a $20,000 debt in 2020 and didn't pay off any principal, as of today the nominal value would still be $20,000 but the real value would be $16,899 in 2020 dollars, because inflation has eroded the value of the debt by 15.5% in that period. This is why debt is the best hedge against inflation — the higher the rate of inflation, the greater the gap in value between the dollars borrowed and the dollars repaid.
