Just wondering what hockey fans think of the canucks draft pic fifth overall defenceman.

I agree with the concept of building a team from the goalie, out... you can never have too many D-man in your system. So, I think it was a good pick. However, we'll see in about 5 - 6 years if the Canucks haven't send him packing.

History repeats...1990 NHL Draft.....Canucks pass on Keith Tkachuk in the first round to draft Shawn Antoski, FFS!!!!
Antoski did bring Naslund in trade a few years later but that's beside the point. A power, scoring winger is exactly what was need....:noidea:

I think it was a good choice, and I'm glad they passed on Tkachuk for Juolevi. The Canucks need a good skilled D with an offensive upside more than they need a winger. The only winger that might have been worth a different choice was Laine.

Edler has proved he's not that guy who will spark a power play that actually works. Tanev and Hamhuis are not that type of high-scoring D. I'm not saying that Juolevi will be another Lidstrom or Ray Bourque (which would be a long unanswered dream for this franchise), but if the guy can at least be a Jeff Brown or Matthias Ohlund (before the eye injury) then that goes a long way to fixing what's wrong with this team.

The only other thing that might have changed their plans would have been the availability of a star center. But those were already gone, and I think they got the best D available this year.

sure, build from the back out…but there's no scoring up front.

Canucks will be a bottom feeder again this upcoming season or two. So I am already looking forward to the 2017 and 2018 drafts! :tea:

I believe it was Alek Stojanov, not Antoski that got Naslund.
You're correct burcs, another meat head Stojanov. Antoski was traded to the Flyers then signed with the Penguins as a FA. Makes passing on old man Tkachuk in 1990 even worse!!!

Hind sight is 20/20 meathead.
If you are actually old enough to really know how that draft went down- Antoski was applauded by many GMs and league insiders as an outstanding pick. Tkachuk at #19 was missed by about a dozen other teams that would have liked a do-over.
Also- remember Peter Nedved at #2 in the same draft? The crowd went WILD when he was picked- EVERYONE thought he would be the man- pretty funny how that worked out too.
Or Ricci at #4? Scissons at #6- now those were some GREAT picks- the list goes on. Or how about Dougie Weight at #34? A lot of teams passed and missed the boat- happens all the time.
Or later drafts #1 overall- Daigle? Stefan? Yakupov? Seemed like good ideas at the time.
Just goes to show- these kids are 18 years old- so you never really know how they will mature or turn out- outside of the very few generational players.
Ragging about missed picks is fucking juvenile.

True at 18, you never know how they will mature and turn out professionally.

Our new D man is supposed to be a mobile playmaker. A bust or a Duncan Keith or Rob Niedermayer?

We won't know for 5 or more years since D men take longer to mature in the league.

personally it seemed like tkachuk was never their man. Dubois or Joulevi seemed to be the main two. I was SHOCKED and extremely dissapointed when they took Dubois 3rd overall, as we need a #1 C to replace Henrik when he retires. I have no problem with Joulevi, a top 2 D (hopefully assuming everything works out) and we needed one badly. I think we will be bottom feeders for the next few years, so lets hope we keep drafting well and can contend in 5-7 years

inexact science is a good way to put it.

it was tough enough to predict how a young player would develop when the draft age was 20,trying to guage how a kid of 18 will
do is that much harder.

off-topic,but I read Benning was fined $50,000 for his comments on Subban.I can't recall his quoted words but they seemed innocent enough.

I guess because the Leafs-Ron Wilson and by extension old Grumpy Burke- were fined a few years back for premature comments regarding going after the Sedins at FA then the League feels obligated to nail Benning.
Totally different IMO but it is what it is I guess- those are the rules. But I call BS. Not like it's not known by all- and how many comments have been made about Stamkos but Yzerman isn't crying. Bergevin in MTL just doesn't have the sack to say unequivocally that Subban is not on the market- because he secretly wants to move him.

off-topic,I admit,but a question....there's a website(which I've forgotten) that gives future odds of a team's playoff chances, eg what are the Blue Jays %chance
of making the post-season?
it changes on a near daily basis.

would appreciate any info.

I agree it may be an inexact science but there is one variable that makes the first draft picks mostly a bust; at least as far as the Canucks are concerned. I'd say the reason they are a bust is self inflicted.

Overwhelmingly they have tried to get the biggest player available at their pick rather than the most skilled.

I read this article over a year ago and it's still relevant today. They discuss the fixation of size over skill that caused the draft pick problem.

News this aft Subban to Nashville straight up for Shea Webber. I'd love to see Weber in a Canuck uniform some day.

And they took Nedved instead of Jagr - Picked Antoski as you stated Tkachuk and Martin Brodeur (we did have Capt. Kirk) who at the time was not too shabby.
