Craigslist call girl covets hush money
Cops: it's a cautionary tale for online johns

An Abbotsford man had a nasty brush with the dark side of Internet escorts after being threatened with extortion about his online solicitations from a woman he contacted through Craigslist, said police.

Abbotsford Police Department Const. Ian MacDonald said an Abbotsford man in his late 30s, who described himself as a working professional, contacted the police for advice on how to deal with being blackmailed by a call girl.

"He indicated to us that the escort he made arrangements with . . . was going to share personal information with all his friends, work colleagues, etc. if he didn't buck up some money," said MacDonald.

Because litigation could bring adverse publicity to his situation, and the fact that some of his online interactions with the escort took place at work, the john in question is not pushing to lay charges, said MacDonald.

Rather, the man was more motivated in talking to police about how to protect himself from further personal attacks.

"He's obviously greatly concerned about his privacy, but for us it's a warning [to the public]," said MacDonald.

Police think the scam reveals another danger of sharing personal information to strangers, and highlights a disturbing trend for law enforcement as a growing number of people make sexual transactions online.

"As far as procuring the services of an escort [online], there are a number of inherent risks aside from what you might consider Criminal Code-related. There is danger to your person, to your bank accounts, to your personal information and danger to your reputation by going down this road," said MacDonald.

Dude I would deny everything to my death! Even with photos! How much private info do you give up with someone you meet on CL?

Stories like that irritate me so much, ugh. The girls that do this job honestly, try so hard to establish trust worthy relationships. How are you going to trust the girl that screens? When somebody does things like that, it puts us all back a few steps. :(

Good for him, for going to the cops. Lots of men would be afraid to, which is why girls like that have the upper hand. If you are being extorted by anybody, go to the police!!!!

I think blackmail is far more common than we would like to admit. Personal info is a currency that some deal in with little or no regard for the outcome.

So wasn't there a thread already on this board about that story happening to someone else or even that person? When I read the link it sounded so familiar. I wouldn't know how to find the thread on it but I do remember that Callgirl tried to extort a guy buy the same way and how she got his information was looking up the e-mail address on facebook so that was how she got his friends info and all....

I am sure this happens all the time. Sadly some don't consider private info private if it can be found on the internet......ridiculous of course.....but that is a fact....

Also a dumb thing to do on the girls part. You never know how the guy might react to such a threat....
Got to agree with you there. Just because you know a name and phone number, place of work/residence dosen't mean you know who you are dealing with. It's interesting how so many serial killers and other high profile killers, are described as nice guys, quiet etc.
