I hope you all had a safe and fun Halloween! Had more than a few kids here despite the crappy weather. But definitely not the numbers we used to see in this neighbourhood. Still, always fun to see the costumes. Surprisingly, no Avengers showed up here. I think my favourite tonight was a little Nintendo Luigi.

I believe that The Conjuring was released on dvd and blu ray this week (and I suppose would also be available now on those "digital download" and rental sites)

I watched The Conjuring last week. I read where someone referred to it as "this generation's Poltergeist." I'd say that's a pretty apt comparison. I'd actually go so far as to say that it's Poltergeist by way of The Exorcist. There are definitely a few horror movie cliches at play but in this case, in my opinion, those moments work. And the performances are quite good all around, including those of the rather young actresses playing the Perron family's children. Overall, I would rank this as one of the most effectively chilling fright films I've seen and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a really good scary movie.

Also of note: Some cineplex theaters have something tonight called RiffTrax Live: Night of the Living Dead at 7:30 PM. If I understand correctly, it's the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys "riffing" during a presentation of the original Romero classic. I have to admit that I've enjoyed seeing them mock cheesy old sci-fi movies but I hold Night of the Living Dead in a higher regard and don't think I would appreciate this as much.

Last weekend I went to Potters House of Horrors in Vancouver, where a cray lady literally chased me through the parking lot, and then proceeded to watch this movie until 2am. I don't do well with scary movies. Needless to say, I didn't sleep well that night. Also a couple days later I woke up at 3:07am and freaked the hell out.

Also, sometimes I still peek out from behind the shower curtain to make sure the girl from the Ring isn't there
