Shopping in Vancouver

Maybe this question is best answered by the ladies, but where is the best area to go shopping in, in Vancouver? I am looking for nice lingerie, shoes, cute dresses. I am into punk/rockabilly/pin-up type fashion and even some vintage stuff!

Also, what are the best areas for touristy adventures? I'd love to go somewhere where I can relax... any nice beaches or waterfronts? What about coffee shops and night clubs!

Any suggestions I can get would be much appreciated!

I am so looking forward to my trip!

Honestly, IMHO the Granville St. strip is pretty douchey and top 40. I think you'd probably like places like Lotus, Gorgomish, Fabric, maybe Shine too.

I agree. Skip Robson & Metrotown, just big chain stores you'll find anywhere. Here's a fairly accurate map (a few shops have closed, new ones opened) of the area with links..

http://lifeontheblock.ca/mainstreet/map-shop/
That is exactly what I was going to suggest. My spots are Main st and I also like some of the stores on West 4ht in kits. Of course, commercial street has some goodies too. Those are the spots where you'll find locally owned stores that carry independent lines. Nice stuff.

There are also a couple on West 10th...

Robson doesn't have anything to offer that would be any different than shopping back home, so honestly I would skip it.

There are also a couple need places on mainland st & Hamilton st in Yaletown.

I think you've gotten some great ideas for shopping and I've been told by many women that Main St is one of the best areas for variety as it hasn't gentrified yet. I think you are going to love Vancouver and the only complaint I've heard is that it's nightlife is kind of dull compared to places like Montreal. I'm not sure how it compares to Toronto but you have to remember that we are an outdoorsy, sporty city that doesn't spend a lot of time indoors.

I almost forgot. Vancouver is overflowing with coffee shops and most of the ones on Main St. are very good. You have the ubiquitous Stabucks, of course, but also a lot of independant, unique types and most serve a good brew.

I recommend JJ Beans on Commercial Drive. When I lived in Vancouver I spent half my life in that place! People are really friendly in that neighbourhood, you're sure to make a new friend.

Then you should check out one of the Book Warehouse locations... I can spend so much time in there... and I do. lol I've just recently realized I would probably find some good used books if I just spent as much time in a used bookstore. I'm not really sure which ones are all the good ones yet, but I did find one that wasn't too bad... Don't remember what it was called but it was right next door to my hair salon, which is in Gastown (438 west Pender)

Yes, Vancouver's appeal isn't really the nightlife.. not to me anyway. I didn't even attempt to get much into it when I got here because I knew there was no way it could compare. But that's ok, Vancouver is just about something else than nightlife action for me... It's about everything staying green and alive all year round, it's about Stanley park, kits dog beach or English bay... It's about the unavoidable Starbucks addiction, 7eleven's and Great Canadian Superstore. haha Soooo kidding. Oh.. and I almost forgot; it is about paying outrageous rents to live in a shoebox on the 55th floor, with no possible chance of making it out of a building in case of a fire or earthquake. Can't forget that. :p

One spot I really liked is Subeez on Homer st in Yaletown. It's basically open all day as a restaurant, brunch on weekends and then also live dj in the evening. It's got a nice little patio - even if you have to take it inside at 11pm everywhere in Vancouver (which makes a lot of sense considering Granville st is a loud, disgusting and ridiculously drunken mess until all hours most days of the week, but hey...:p haha)

We are a casual first come, first served, kind of gin joint. At Subeez we make room for everyone. We do not discriminate against age, race, gender, sexuality, politics or musical taste, however, you’d better be a Canucks fan. Come down and lounge on the patio. Welcome friend. There is a beauty here.
DJ's spin Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Their Brie & chicken sandwich is so yummy! ;)

summary

hmmm.. seems like most of it has been covered. but here in my 2 cents:

i'd agree that Robson, PC, Metro nor Holt are your style for clothes. ic that modelexpress has been mention as well as SOMA Block. as suggested there are a few stores(DC, New World Design) close by modelexpress in the gastown area. if you are looking for custom corset u may find it here. Also one off davie st. in the west end. there are vintage store in gastown and main st(soma). Also Yaletown has some pricier options as well as D2W on granville. there are some vintage stores on west 4th too.

As mentioned, clubbing in Vancouver is a WOT. only go if you are there with you friends. But then again clubbing is always fun when you are in a new city. When everything is new and exctiting. Gourgomash is an after hour place also Lotus, Celebrities on Tuesday's and Canvas. Depends what music u like. Either ways if you have partied in other major cities. the club scene bites unless there is a special event.

best adventure in Vancouver is in my pants! :D . just kidding. for beach i'd think you'd like 1)wreck beach, 2)Spanish/Lacarno/Jericho beach, or 3)Ambleside. water sports and activities are fun in the summer. either motorized or not. maybe consider, try kayaking in deep cove. they half 2 for 1 specials on certain evenings. you need to bike or walk the seawall.

watch the sunset whilst enjoying some wine/bevies at Lift, Nu(50% off bottles on Sunday), watermark, milestones on davie, boathouse on pacific, sandbar(granville island), Ocean Club(west van). None of them have really good food. the best food of this list would be Nu(owned by Harry K, which also owns neighboring C's, Best seafood resto).

vancouver has been taken in by starbucks mayhem. but Timmy is gaining in popularity. JJ beans has better coffee and cafe artigiano has the best cappuccino in YVR(closest thing to Italian coffee). Subeez has a sister location wasubee on commercial drive. thought i dont recommend it cause it isnt close to the beach and the food isnt good. it is a good hang out chill out place. and to meet friends. but i am sure you can meet them by the beach or somewhere nicer weather permitting.

like any small city Vancouver has lots to offer. but u do need to get acclimatize and discover for yourself. hope you are able to get here to enjoy the last bit of summer. as for industry nite, it is a wonderful idea. though i don't see it happening, based on the respond. try again in when summer is over. :D
