Hi, I've been told that even with a condom you can still get infected with some things.

What viruses or STDS etc, can be caught from sex a condom?
What are the chances as well?

I badly want to go to my first SP, but if you can get something even while using a condom then its not for me.

Thanks so much.

Hi LangstonW

Condoms offer great protection against sexually transmitted infections when having vaginal or anal sex. The only problem is that certain sexually transmitted infections transmit from skin to skin contact. Since condoms do not cover all the genitals there is still a chance that these can be transmitted.

The most common of these would be the human papilloma virus (HPV).

The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is also another common virus.

Syphilis can transmit by skin to skin contact but is not as common as HPV or HSV.

It is difficult to work out the exact risk as it really depends on if the person has the infection in the first place.

I found one study that showed that condom usage reduced the transmission of genital HSV type 2 from infected men to women by 50%.

Most things in life carry some level of risk. For example if you drive a car there is the chance of getting hurt in an accident. You can reduce your risk by driving a safe car, sticking to speed limits, not drinking alcohol, wearing seatbelts etc.

With sex there will always be some level of risk both physical and emotional. Using condoms and both people testing will really reduce this risk.

The good thing with sex is that you can have different types of safer sex such as hand jobs, penis between ladies breast, erotic massage.

i guess there is some, at least theoretical, risk that one can get hpv and hsv via hand job.

HSV
Yes there could be the possibility of a theoretical risk with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV can infect the hands this is called herpetic whitlow. This is basically herpes around the fingernails. If someone had this type of infection I guess it would be possible to pass herpes this way. In practice we do not really see genital herpes infections from hand jobs. If you are going to have sex a hand job is one of the safest ways you can do it.

HPV
The human papilloma virus (HPV) is a difficult one as they are still researching this area.

Currently they believe that the types of HPV that cause warts on the hands are not the same type of HPV that causes genital warts. This means that some one with hands warts would not be at risk of passing these to someone’s genitals.

The one question I get asked a lot is what about someone who gives someone a hand job and then uses the same hand to give you a hand job. It does not appear that HPV will spread this way, but it is a good idea to wash your hands between partners. The main way HPV spreads is from direct genital to genital contact.

Hand jobs are seen as safer sex. If this is still a worry to people (its hard to enjoy sex when you are worried) I would suggest using a medical exam glove and lots of lubricant.

Sounds silly, but...

What if you covered the area around you genitals and half up your penis with seran wrap and than put a condom on top? So say you took a big square of seran wrap, put a hole in the middle, put your penis through and than pulled a condom over and ontop of some of the seran wrap to seal it off?

Then you would have that square of plastic to protect the surrounding areas from skin-to-skin contact? Would that work? Could the plastic of the seran wrap provide the same level of protection as the material the condom is made out of?

I know this sounds silly, but if I go see an SP, I will do it. And I doubt they would care about the extra safety measures.

I am 100% clean and ALWAYS want to keep it that way.

Thanks

Hi manhorse

From the method you have described I am not sure how well the saran wrap would work. Saran wrap has a way of clinging to itself. I think after a few thrusts that it would just be stuck together. Given this I am not sure how effective it will be.

From what you have written it sounds like you are concerned about your health and would like to avoid any unnecessary risk. It can be hard to enjoy sex if you get worried about it soon after you are finished.

If risk is a concern for people they can still have sex by lowering the risk of the activity. For example if you are uncomfortable with the risk of protected vaginal sex you could always try a hand job, tit fucking etc…

Hello Health Nurse,

To add to this thread, am I wrong in assuming that HIV can also be transmitted with the usage of condoms. I always thought that using condoms greatly reduced your risk of contracting HIV, but the virus is still small enough to pass through the pores of condoms....

Hi Exotic Non-Pro and Missy Mariposa

Here is an article from The Sex Information and Education Council of Canada (SIECCAN). It is called “The effectiveness of latex condoms for prevention of STI/HIV”

Here is a link to the full article.
http://www.sieccan.org/pdf/mckay_cjhs2007_condom effectiveness.pdf

The article has some great information about latex condoms. In regard to the question that Exotic Non-Pro asked, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA have said that

“Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens”

The article goes on to mention that other laboratory studies have found the same thing in that HIV sized viruses do not go through latex condoms. They do mention that if leakage did occur that the amount would be so small that it would be highly unlikely for anyone to become infected.

Missy Mariposa brought up a great point in that it is not the pores leaking that is the problem but is more human error. This can be from improper use or storage.

It seems that all the information about condom usage is written in point form and does not show real pictures of penises and condoms.

Does anyone know of any information out there on the proper use of condoms in a more realistic format e.g. Video. If you have any information could you PM me.

Thanks
