I posted this in the middle of another long thread and I think it deserves its own thread.

Pick a Group

There is info at http://www.wccsip.ca/BCCEC.html for the BC Coalition of Experiential Communities. If everyone got behind that group with whatever support they were comfortable providing there would be a better chance of getting government support for survival sex workers. Help them and everyone will benefit.

If you know of another group that would be a better focus for support and action then lets hear about it.
***************
Then, this morning I found these comments about inventors forming a professional association. These comments could apply to sex trade workers. A well supported voluntary association can challenge bad info in the press, fight bad laws or bylaws and improve working conditions for the worst off. Doing these things will improve conditions for all sex trade workers regardless of their income level or type of service.

Vancouver could have an international reputation as a sex trade friendly city where workers make good money, clients get good service and there is no dark underbelly in the industry.

*********************
EVENT: coffee meeting to discuss creating a Professional Association of Inventors & Innovative Product Developers

DESCRIPTION:

If we collectively decide to form it, this group could make recommendations to Fed. & Prov. govt. about how to effectively fund innovative product development, which work usually appears to go effectively unfunded today.

It might perhaps even oversee the whole process of innovative product development funding, doing things which seem to be ignored by current processes, such as identifying social priorities/targets and "ultimate potential value", prospects for success, lessons to be gained for future projects in the event of failure, past achievement record and qualifications of applicants, and funding the small but vital amounts, beneath current funding program radar screens, often required for initial product research and prototype development.

Also potential for discussion: qualifications for membership, format of organization & meetings.
**********************

There is a huge opportunity for changes that will benefit everyone, whether client, provider or general public.

we should all suggest names for the industry association....

i'm at a loss, some suggested that saying association at all would turn the government off....

stacy is good...
any other thoughts? the boys at the pub wanted it to be the FTWA flesh trade workers association, so fighters and tattoo artists could join...i know, not so much.....

remember, the craft guilds like the canadian guild for erotic labor come later, this should an industry encompassing name that includes business owners, consumers, workers, all genres and all genders....

anyhoo, anyone got any ideas?

Missy, with your web site and those excellent nipple photos in the breast thread there is no doubt you qualify as an association member.

Susi, "saying association at all would turn the government off...." ? Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!!

I expect the greatest value of an association would be that it would give sex trade workers of all sorts the respect they deserve. This would make it easier to let friends and family know what you do for a living. From some of the posts I have seen I suspect that benefit may be the most important.

There should also be better income, better health and better safety for all.

Also, if you ever get rid of the stinking laws and by-laws there will likely be a catch. The self-righteous hypocrites and bigots are likely to suggest regulation as an alternative to criminal laws. If you have a strong association in place there will be a better chance of avoiding regulation. I would hate to see regulation of the sex trade.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
I'd love to join the organisation, I just don't know who would verify me as a real worker.
i would!!lol:eek:

it's easy to prove, it's just that we've had people lie about their sex work experience to get jobs....i know it's fucked up. we're just trying to filter out the idiots who would join just to fuck with us is all having ahd some bad experiences in the past.

but you run ads, you have reviews, you are in...

hb40- i may to randomly gratutously cougar attack you...

treveller- you are right we must do something or the government will. it seems a forgone conclusion that the laws will fall from what i've read so far in the charter challenge stuff from osgood. it only remains to be seen what will be put in in it's place....

we have time we could do it....

a complaints process governed by the industry, by committee-worker,customer, business owner, and one other person....

i don't know.lol

Start With The Easy Parts

a complaints process governed by the industry, by committee-worker,customer, business owner, and one other person....[??]
I suggest dealing with complaints is one of the last things to consider. When you do, the Chamber of Commerce (CC)/Better Business Bureau (BBB) model would be a good place to start. Perhaps the CC/BBB would be a good model for the the association in general. The CC model provides for political action and commercial promotion while the BBB model provides client/consumer confidence.

Just allowing members to use a logo and declare their membership in advertising would be a big step forward as it is for business that display the BBB logo.

This link would be a good starting point for the BBB
http://mainlandbc.bbb.org/SitePage.aspx?site=164&id=28cbc209-8202-434a-bada-4341c56d163f

There are all the other professional associations to consider as models as well. The quickest way to get an association up and running would be to pick one other association and use that as a model, at least as a starting point.

How would this be for a project. Get a bunch of volunteers together and each volunteer studies one organization. When everyone has done their research you (we?) all get together for a noisy dinner. That would be way more fun than doing it online with PERB. Everyone describes the pros and cons of the organization they looked at and everyone votes to pick a favourite as a model starting point for STACy. I can handle the voting.

Organizations to consider as models would be the Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau, the College of Physicians and Surgeons, the BC Medical Association, the RNABC, the BCNU, the two massage practioners associations, unions in general and others. If there are more volunteers then there can be more models studied.

Has this already been done? Who wants to volunteer? Can clients volunteer? As a sex trade groupy I would really enjoy that dinner out.

Fouled Up Again

Again I failed to follow my own advice. I was supposed to read first then post.

It has all been done and I missed the dinner.

See either http://www.wccsip.ca/sexIndustryAssn.html[url] or [url]http://www.wccsip.ca/resources.html then select "Labor on the Margins: Sex Industry Safety and Stabilization - 2007 " for an excellent 20 page PDF. It looks like the Chamber of Commerce / Better Business Bureau model has already been chosen. In and case it would be good fun telling telling those organizations that they are the model for the Sex Trade Association of Canada

Perhaps the SEXUAL Trade Association of Canada would be a better name. What dancers is not "sex" but it is "sexual" as are all the other services.
