I'm betting that the guy gets a couple of weeks of house arrest and a 24 hour driving suspension. Or maybe if the judge is in a really bad mood, his driving suspension will be for the entire couple of weeks of house arrest, and maybe he'll throw on a whole 10-20 hours of community service.

I bet he's already out on bail and hasn't even had his licence suspended yet.

Maybe not even. Somehow the situation will be turned around saying how the kid is a victim of circumstances, he grew up in an aggressive a manner due to his upbringing and he's taking his aggression out by drinking and driving fast. Maybe they'll even throw in the alcoholic syndrome he inherited, therefore he didn't really want to drink by choice, it's an addiction. We should be saving our tears for him instead of the newly-engaged couple, because "why were they walking in the dark anyways?"

Max... community hours plus "rehab".

And of course he'll collect an ICBC settlement for his 'emotional trauma' and sue the VPD for $1,000,000 for chasing him into the water.

Then he'll collect disability cheques for the rest of his life because of his 'disability' of being drunk all the time.

Looks like his parents are already making sure that their ICBC premiums don't go up and they can't get sued..

They are saying that he stole the car.

Tragic. The problem I think will be the length of time it will take to have this case brought before a judge. The accused is facing 7 criminal charges but as we have all seen inevitably it seems crown counsel will accept reduced charges to have the case closed. By the time all is said and done will the victims still be remembered ? We will have drive-by shootings, drug related gang deaths etc, etc. We as the public may be numbed by all the violence that the senseless deaths of 2 young, well-liked adults may become just statistics.

How did they get hit? No headlights? No sound? Did it come up onto the curb? Or did it turn a corner without warning?

He was speeding and ran them over in a crosswalk.

If I remember right, it's a tricky location and you wouldn't see the car coming until it was too late if it was speeding (the speed limit is 30 or 40 km/h there)

I go past that intersection every day, and it's definitely a location where a pedestrian wouldn't necessarily see (or hear) a speeding car coming.
