Here's a couple more books that I found useful for training:

Bailey, Covert. (1999). The Ultimate Fit or Fat. Houghton Mifflin: Boston ISBN 0-618-00204-9

Edwards, Sally. (1997). The Heart Rate Monitor Book. Fleet Feet Press: Sacramento

Both texts are old and there are probably better sources for information. Bailey's book deals with aerobic exercise and it's impact upon metabolism. Edwards book shills Polar heart rate monitors but manages to explain the value of heart rate monitoring for training/metabolic purposes.

Good luck with your triathlons! The season starts now! :)

I've quit smoking - it's been 9 days. :D

The first few days where tricky, but I kept telling myself "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" There are also moments of 'habit' that I get these waves of desire, but they pass when I move away from the habit.

Sitting at the computer
Driving
After a meal
Drinking my first coffee of the day

~lets hear a high five~

I have a huge crush on a trainer here in Edmonton (lets call him Dan). Dan says that you should think before you put in your mouth. So everything I've been munching on is fruit and small amounts of other stuff. I'm eating 6-7 meals a day - but it looks more like snacking than meals.

Training has taken a back seat for a while, we're only walking right now, and VERY short distances.

No new recipes, just doing what I know. No carbs with proteins, wait an hour and eat your piece of bread you want.

I'm enjoying my time off - but am getting bored.

That's a great accomplishment! Congratulations! You're adding years to your life while saving money too! I've never known anyone who regretted giving up the smoking habit. You are to be commended.

Hope your other health commitments are following along in tandem. As you leave smoking behind you'll find your metabolism changing in significant ways. Your ability to work out with greater intensity will improve, as will the taste of foods. Your body will just work more efficiently.

There are several books you may want to seek out that may be of help on the nutritional side of things.

Michael Colgan's "Nutrition for Champions" is an excellent intro to healthy eating following paleo diet principles. Also his "You can Prevent Cancer" is an excellent book.

Loren Cordain's "Paleo Diet" is also recommended.

Once again congrats on 9 smoke free days!

Driving
Annalise - first off congrats on the quitting smoking. Driving is the toughest part for me and my diet. Snacking on carrot sticks while driving into Edmonton just does not give me the same joy as a bag of licorice or chips.

Keep it up.
