Poppies for Peace

Recently Liberal leader Stephane Dion outlined a constructive and principled plan to address Harper’s irresponsibility on the Canadian Afghanistan mission… one of the plans key elements being the so-called “Poppies for Peace” proposal to develop an effective strategy to combat the problems stemming from the Afghanistan economy’s dependence on the illegal opium trade.

In effect Dion has aligned with some of the recommendations put forward by the SENLIS Council’s
Feasibility Study on Opium Licensing in Afghanistan for the Production of Morphine and Other Essential Medicines
and the Washington Quarterly published article Poppies for Peace: Reforming Afghanistan’s Opium Industry (Peter van Ham, Jorrit Kamminga)

Clearly, today’s U.S. led military counter-narcotics strategy is ineffective and counterproductive – reconstruction efforts are severely constrained as long as opium dependence remains. An alternative approach is needed… now is the time for the Poppies for Peace proposal: using medicinal poppy cultivation as a bridge to sustainable development and lasting security in Afghanistan. We need look no further than the Turkish model and it’s 1970’s success in switching from unregulated poppy growing that fueled the world’s heroin drug trade to licensed poppy cultivation for the production of medicines…

Stephane Dion – forward thinking, decisive leadership!

Figures you'd be enough of a leftie moron to buy into that lame-ass idea.

Ok, Mr Smarty-Pants..

How exactly do you propose they 'peacefully' keep the taliban and their terrorist buddies from stealing the crops, without military involvement?

One of the reasons that no Canadian government has ever approved licensing of farmers here to grow poppies for pharma use is because of the huge security problems. Now try it when the guys who want to steal the poppies have heavy artillery.

Good luck with that one.

Duh...
See you didn’t bother to read the linked to articles.

At this point continuing with a force-based eradication policy will only continue to fuel the insurgency and terrorism… all it will do is alienate the farming communities… all it will do is create similar conditions to those that existed prior to when the Taliban initially took control of Afghanistan. The military counter-narcotic option, the forced poppy eradication option, is a counterproductive approach as long as the developmental and economic root causes of the opium problem remain.

The farmers hold no allegiances – they are farming to exist. At this point the Taliban has been quite successful in exploiting any Nato/U.S. military efforts to remove the farmers (poppy) livelihood. The last thing the Taliban wants is to be seen as alienating the farmers… they do not want the farmers… the people… as an enemy. They do not want the farmers aiding and abetting the Nato/U.S. military. Give the farmers a viable alternative option that continues to provide them a livelihood… Poppies for Peace!

Hmm.. your idea got shown for the foolish stupidity that it is so you got the mods to delete all the posts on the thread that weren't yours...
Hey jjinvan – riddle me this… is it possible for someone to delete a thread, then re-create it… and then add in, as a quote, the single comment (your initial post) that had any relevance to the intended thread. You do know that the opening post in a thread has control of the thread… right?... you do know that, right? You do know that anyone can delete any post in the first 24 hours after that post has been made… right?... you do know that, right? You do know that if the opening post in a thread is deleted, the whole thread is deleted… right?... you do know that, right?

The only posts missing from this re-created thread are those gun control comments… just the couple of posts that had nothing to do with this thread. Here’s a thought – if you’d like to start up a gun control thread… go for it – start your own thread.

And now back to the topic at hand.

Its absolutely insane for any foriegn force to try and occupy Afganistan. The British tried, and the Russian army tried to wipe out the Afgan's and got there ass kicked. The US tried to bomb the Taliban out of existance and there as strong as ever. And now all the NATO countries is having a problem in taking out the Taliban. There are just to tough to beat using military power. Brute force never has and never will work.
Agreed - the military led forced poppy eradication has only resulted in the largest poppy crops ever seen. Clearly, other options should be considered.

No dissenting opinions have been removed - anything that related directly to the topic is still here. What was removed were your couple of unrelated remarks concerning gun control... because you and the other guy thought you were cute in purposely steering the thread that way. Please go ahead and add your views, your critique of this Poppies for Peace topic... that is certainly welcome.

Of course... in a self-moderating gesture... I also removed the sniping that occurred last night concerning "this board versus that other board". I would encourage you all, of that mindset, to start and post in a thread that speaks directly to your concerns... that way you won't need to scurry back and forth between boards - just say it all here. C'mon, you can do it...

Seconded. Anyone else?

Especially when JJ and myself and others agreed what a ludicrous
Idea this poppy growing idea is and when we replied how ludicrous it
is, even by "dissenting" posts, they were cleaned from the thread.

Obviously this OTBn or whoever isn't open to having people disagree.
A tad shallow are we??
