Good news about the qualifying offer today on Luongo. Next step, is to secure him on a long term deal. According to today's Sun, Luongo's price will go up from the $26 mil/4 yr deal left on the table in Florida. Hmm..maybe something in the $28-30 mil range? Works out to $7-7.5 mil a season, which would make him the highest paid Canuck ever.

I have a good feeling that Nonis will get the deal done by late this week before July 1. However, all is not lost if a deal cannot be reached quickly.. one option is to flip him over to the Sens in exchange for that Emery, Havlat, Phillips, and a 1st rounder package the Sens purportedly made to Keenan. IMO, that was a much better package than what the 'Nucks were offering anyway, so why not?? :D

If that were the case, here's the new top line: Naslund-Morrison-Havlat; Phillips and Ohlund would be the top defensive pairing and the team could either keep Emery as a backup or flip him over to Buffalo (plus Cooke) in exchange for Biron. Problem solved!

I do believe that very same offer was made to the Oilers for Pronger, although we know know the big guy wants to be back in the States.

But by freeing up the salaries of Big Bert plus the other two, I'm sure a long-term deal with Luongo can be reached.

Doesn't that seem a touch much for a player who hasn't yet played a single minute in a Vancouver uniform? (particularly given this cities notorious reputation for chewing up and spitting out goalies like nothing).

True, but my purpose for bringing up that possible Ottawa trade (if either side is willing to make it) along with the swap with Buffalo was to point out that Nonis would still have many holes to fill even after signing Luongo...trade clouts, sign the twins and carter, try to keep jovo, acquire another d-man, get some scoring punch on the top line, etc. The ottawa deal would plug many of those holes and leave the team with plenty of cap space to tweak the roster further. Yes and considering the team's historically bad luck with goalies, putting all their eggs in one basket with Luongo might be risky even given his caliber..

if they swung the trade for Biron here's what it comes down to: Wouldn't Biron be an upgrade over any of Clouts, Auld, Noronen, and Emery???

Getten Havlet and Phillips would be dope... Havlet is a super star in the makin.. Biron is pretty solid also.

Are you serious, you think that Morrison is a top line center? He would be lucky to make it as a second or third line center for any other team.

BTW, is it just me or is he the "Shermanator" from the film "American Pie"?

With the saving in salaries from Bert, Jovo and Clouts they can easily afford Luongo. But they'd better pray long and hard he doesn't have Cloutier's knees. Goalies can get injured pretty easily. And I don't think Luongo has ever played with a team that does as much travelling as the west coast teams do.

But they haven't got rid of Cloutier yet.
Luongo has been durable--for the last 5 seasons he has played in 51, 58, 65, 72 and 75 (in 05-06) games. His save % has been .914 or better every season, very good considering the number of shots he faced every night.
All that aside, I think $30mil/4yrs is too much right away. Going with the qualifying offer for now and signing him later in the season after:
he's had a chance to prove himself in a Canuck uniform,
his wife says she's happy here (no joke),
and finding out where the cap will be at next year,
would be safer.
Besides, with Jovo gone, they better be ready to lay out $$$ for decent defencemen to play in front of him.

Sounds like the whole team is queer...

Best to just blow up the entire team and start over...

To be honest I think the Luongo deal was a mistake... Trading Bertuzzi definetly wasn't. The simply fact of the matter is that the Canucks wont make the playoff's next year, and more than likely not the year after that. Much like Jovo, Loungo is an overated and untested, with huge potential, but almost no delivery to this point in his career. Why sign a guy, who's roots are in a place almost the polar opposite to Vancouver. I see Luongo in a Tampa Bay uniform next season, unless the Canucks are smart enough to flip him to a team like Ottawa.

The Canucks are sorely lacking in talent up front past the Sedin twins ( which i cant believe I'm fucking saying) The Canucks need to rebuild, and will be, at least for the next few years, I only hope Nonis is smart enough to pull it together.

Why the else, was Mark Crawford so happy the Canucks gave him his walking papers? He won't have to deal with the carnage of the rebuild.

Auld was a GOOD GOALIE, and I'm sorry to see him go.

"Nah i heard linden is gay"

What a crock of BS!! Do you know this for a fact or are you just slamming someone to make yourself feel important?

I've met Trevor and his wife and I can tell you they are a terrific couple. How can you be so mean to someone who has given so much to this community?

And for the record I have nothing against gays, but this type of comment is immensely derogatory to his image amongst jocks.

There's a new rumor/report that surfaced that there's a strong possibility that the Sens will trade Havlat to SJ for Vesa Toskala. Deal might even get announced tomorrow. Nonis better get a gauge soon on whether or not he can sign Luongo long term, before the back up plans evaporate.

Another team to talk to would be Detroit. How about Luongo and Morrison for Datsyuk, Holmstrom and Kronwall?? :D

Here are problems with that one:
1) Datsyuk is clearly the key guy coming in and he has all of 3 goals and 15 points in 42 playoff games and NO GOALS in his last 20 or so playoff games.

2) 2 Canadians for 3 Europeans when you already have 8 (if they sign Ruutu) on the starting roster, which would then give you 11 or over half your starting lineup in total, is not a winning formula.

Sign Luongo and keep him.

Luongo is a stud. The guy has been #1 the last 3 seasons in shots faced per game. Last year he faced 35 shots a game playing behind the crappiest defense in the NHL yet managed to end the season with 35 wins and and 4 shutouts. You can't blame him for not performing in the playoffs with such a crappy team in front of him. He's got loads of experience on the international front and has been in plenty of big-game situations. Most people around the NHL agree that he's a top 5 goalie.

Well well, looks like Nonis is close to signing Luongo to a 4 yr/ $7 million a year contract.
