Last night was the worst loss of life in the GVRD since the Iron Workers Bridge collapse way back when.

The killer was known to police. Known to have mental health issues. Part of a family, seemingly fairly well to do as his murder weapon was an Audi SUV.

The complicity here is overwhelming to me and my sense of justice is running on overdrive. Probably one of those last straw things, with all the shit going on with the outright corruption in the news every day, all the shit the fact fuck is doin to fuck up the US even more, the number of catch and release situations where citizens are being hurt because the system failed and on and on and fucking on.

Trying to keep the rage down .....

We have a USA and Canadian politics thread specifically for political bias chat. Let’s leave all of that out of this chat.

My heart is broken for the families that lost loved ones last night. There are no words to convey my sadness. I wish them all love and peace and healing ❤‍🩹 💔

It appears the driver had a massive deterioration of his mental health due to the murder of his brother earlier this year, a suicide attempt by his mother, as well as major financial issues.

The mental health system failed him when he needed help the most.

Now we all suffer.

Oh well, that explains it.

This was a mentally ill person but it’s no justification for killing people that have never had anything to do with him.
I agree there are many mentally ill people running around who should be in secure facilities. This started with Riverview (IIRC?) shutting down in the 70s and residents being kicked out into a world they couldn’t cope with.
Many of us old folks remember them suddenly appearing in downtown and Stanley Park became a dangerous place.
I sympathize with these people but I don’t want them harming innocent people.

I am so angry. My phillipino friends are some of the kindest people in Canada. And OMG! The food at Phillipino celebrations is copious and off the hook delicious 😋

So so so saddened by this murderous deranged fucktard killing innocent people on our streets. This shit has to stop! If we have no balls to bring back a Riverview equivalent, we are forever condoning murder by mental incapacitation.

Our hearts are in pain right now. This is a tough one to heal from, knowing it could have and should have been prevented.

There's something that doesn't sense here. The suspect was officially charged. So:
-Either he's mentally ill so he isn't responsible of his acts under criminal law but he has to be locked in a mental health facility
- If he was charged and the judge convicts him, then he cannot be mentally ill so he will be locked in a prison instead.

Reminiscent of 2008 tragedy of Tim McLean in a Greyhound bus. The Selkirk Institute took Vince Li in. After a scant 7 years and a name change Will Baker released on medication. Immediately Greyhound bus parent company in the UK closed down convenient intercity bus travel throughout Canada.

The Tim McLean funeral was three blocks from my house.
Massive police presence- even snipers on the church roof! - because American religious assholes planned to picket the funeral. So a huge crowd showed up to block them.
The Vince Li crap still pisses me off, somehow he got treated as the victim and Tim McLean got forgotten.

Refresh my memory please? what was the plan to picket the funeral about?
Nice Vince feels better though. That's what's important.

It was those Western Baptist lunatics who picket funerals of military veterans.
They said the murder was God's punishment of Canada for allowing same sex marriage.

Missed that one. What does gay marriage have to do with Tim Mclean, I wonder.

That will be a trial issue, if it comes to trial. Defence lawyer could go for incapacity defence and he could be found to be not capable to stand trial. Under our system it is possible the only jail time this guy does is what he's doing now waiting for his bail hearing.

And THAT is the real travesty of the Canadian justice system, where this kind of killer is not put away for good.

I was walking at the same road near food trucks and concert probably just 15 mins earlier than that incident happend and moved to the side of Breka. It was so vibrant, happy people, enjoying with kids and families before this tragedy, I am extremely heart broken and angry when I came to know about it after hearing the police sirons. My condolences for our phillipino friends who lost, and went through this :(.

Mental or not, people who got killed and injured had nothing to do with anyone's mental health. If police and medical professional knew it, that person should have been in mental hospital, in a secured facility and not driving a powerful SUV. If He gets bail, either they should keep him away from public for good and provide him help or police needs to make sure to follow him 24 hours so he or any seriously mental person on the loose is not going to harm anyone.

We should not make it normal for mental people with a sob story, to do anything and even kill others, there is no excuse, its for safety of others.

My sicerest condolences to those affected .
That said, the complete ignorance of people on here with regards to mental health issues is almost as sad. Absolutely zero understanding of what is a very complex issue. 'They should all be in jail!'. Idiots.
Well, that being said. If some steps had been taken about his interactions that got him "known to police" and they were keeping an eye on him. The 11 people killed and the 20 or so badly injured might have had the protection they needed. Instead of waiting until something went wrong. Instead of becoming unwitting sacrificial guinea pigs in an overly offhanded, hands-off policy when the perp was showing repeatedly problematic tendencies. Maybe some "intervention" wouldn't have gone amiss.
