A 'burner' phone is just a phone you can 'throw away'. So it's not a smart phone or anything typically expensive. My suggestion, goto 7-11 and get one of their phones. The plans are cheap and pay as you go. when they run out, they stop working. You buy more 'time' on the 7-11 website or goto 7-11 and buy a top up card. don't use the phone for social media or watching youtube, use it as a text and/or phone contact only.
I use a Dual Sim phone, with a separate sim card from 7-11. They typically have a $100 plan that comes with a sim card and a ton of 'minutes' which lasts me for almost half a year. I disable the SIM card when not in use. Only use it to contact and arrange dates. If I want the number to die, I just buy a new sim card, register a new account, and the other number dies after a few weeks.

I’ve been using an old phone as a burner for several years. Got a 7-11 Speakout sim and pay as you go minutes all paid in cash at a local store. Like drivr8 said don’t use it for anything but text, and a call if absolutely necessary, and $50-100 or so should be good for a year depending on how many SP’s you’re texting and how chatty you are.

If you get a postpaid plan with data you’ll have to use a credit card to pay for it monthly, which I avoid for obvious reasons. Simple prepaid talk and text only can all be done with cash.

If you want a true burner that could never be tied back to you, then I recommend NOT using an old phone.
Best to buy a used black market phone, and by black market I do not mean off ebay.
The serial numbers can still trace the phone back to you.

Example: Buy one from a street boogaloo.
2. Reset said phone
3. buy prepaid sim from a place like 7-eleven using cash

Varies now
Buy a phone and time/data at 7-11 and pay both only with cash, wear a hoodie and a N95 mask, sunglasses and you are golden. The CIA and FBI have openings.

Not really much to worry about.
Under surveillance, a burner phone doesn't truly help much nowadays anyway.
Might help if you find yourself wearing a tin-foil hat.

How much of a concern is this? Is there a real risk of prosecution?
Well, for starters you'd avoid issues like the provider that was cold calling/texting me every couple of weeks asking if I wanted a massage. Imagine having CarPlay/Android Auto playing that message while you have others in your car.

I think its just good practice to keep it separate. Gives you somewhat plausible deniability

I think burners are not to hide criminality in this context, but rather to avoid getting caught by a significant other or family. Having text chains on your phone, or indiscrete MP/SPs contacting you unannounced isn't the safest thing for domestic tranquility.
Exactly this. I don’t use a burner legal issues, I’m seeing legitimate SP’s and not going anywhere near anything that has even a whiff of exploitation where LE are rightly focussing their attention. My burner phone and text APP use is strictly to avoid the above.

So, you don't have to provide personal info when you buy these sim cards at Petro Canada or 7-11 ?

Nope, nothing but some cash. Unless something has changed in the last couple of years.

Just to resurrect this thread. I haven't been able to source out a true "burner phone" 711 requires you to give your email or somesuch now. I asked the guy if I could get one on a cash basis without giving any personal information and he said no. That doesn't exist anymore. You have to give them some kind of contact info. Koodo said the same.
Any enlightenment on this one?
