You have to beware of coyotes and racoons that can attack your pets.
One of my cats got mauled by a racoon in Victoria! Luckily he made it out alive but had a lot of stitches to put him back together.

Coyotes in Vancouver have discovered that Stanley Park is a great place to pick up a dog or kid for a potential snack.

Heck, even in Oak Bay some dogs have gotten attacked by the local deer!

I've seen raccoons all over the lower mainland. Very common.
The lower mainland is full of them. Have a family that comes through my yard regularly. But in BC they only seem to be common below a certain latitude, say Kamloops south. We used to see red fox in the Fraser valley too back in the70’s but the coyotes have displaced them

I live on hundreds of acres….hunters are not stopped by fences or gates…they just cut their way through. You need a lot of shit to survive, an atv with a snow plow, chainsaws and log splitters for firewood….an entire shop of tools, and a real truck, for the bush, and one for town getting the groceries.
the list is as endless as the work is.
I keep a very small fenced yard, because I can’t be bothered….you keep life as basic as possible because you simply don’t have time for complications.

I live in North Vancouver. I see bears, deer, coyotes, racoons, skunks and have had all of these come through my yard. I live about 100 feet from a stream corridor coming down from the mountains. It is hard to have a vegetable garden or fruit bearing trees in the yard. I wouldn't mind living more isolated but affordable acres are nowhere close to adequate health care.

Have you thought about a heat pump for heating? Or a pellet stove that heats water, and the water is used for floor heating.
Maybe some wind turbine or solar for power, with a back up generator, and a battery bank.

It is a LOT of work to maintain.
Even though the space is nice, the maintenance really eats into your time. Always puttering doing something, fixing something, clearing something...

I have in floor heat fueled by wood…on demand hot water on propane, and generators….but no battery bank
to run an operation like mine a person needs hydro…..solar on batteries is small time, that’s like cutting your grass with a lawnmower, instead of a 80 horse John Deere to feed your cattle

If you can make a living ….go get yourself something small like 6 to 20 acres, outside of a smallish town ,and an hour from a large urban center , like Kamloops , Kelowna or Prince George and build your paradise.
just make sure that little town has an ambulance service, drug store and a decent grocery store.

When I lived on a farm as a kid I drove the atv/quad around a lot. Also played a lot of videogames. When we had internet there was only dialup at the time so it took 40+ minutes to download a Linkin Park song lol...

One of my cats was attacked by a raccoon at night .
Excessive bleeding to say the least .
Luckily I was within reasonable driving distance to a 24 hr vet .
He became an indoor cat after that .

Talked to a friend who has an isolated property on the Sunshine Coast. Beautiful home, beautiful appliances, etc. Was cursing up and down on how hard it is get service, especially on the appliances. He thinks that he may have to buy the same expensive appliances simply because they were part of the design. Oh, well.

Worse yet, how to get the sort of service we are all here for, up in the lonelier regions. Bring the lady for a day? Travelling costs? Ugh.
