What are some slang words that you found to be well at odds.
One slang word today is "dope". When I was growing up it meant drugs. Now it suppose to mean cool, awesome, or excellent.... the meanings are at different ends of the spectrum....

Dope : like so many terms came from the black community. Popularized by rappers . I ve never used the term as it seemed to be a black community term that didn't seem to fit or as appropriate as excellent, great or awesome.

Keep in mind that trying to speak or write properly for a french person is also a struggle as it is .

FANNY.

To us it’s an old, polite ish term for her butt. To the English it’s her pussy.

Despite what a few here might want to believe, can you say confirmation bias? You're actually spot-on.

While technically, dope was used in its present day context to mean cool or awesome in the '90s, it wasn’t as widespread or mainstream as it is today. Back then, like already mentioned, it was more niche, mostly tied to certain subcultures like hip-hop. One can deny, but this is fact.

Fast-forward to the last 10-15 years, though, it’s gone way beyond that. Social media, influencers, and younger generations have brought "dope" into everyday use, but it's starting to dwindle, somewhat.

From what I seen and heard, it's now mostly used by those trying to sound cool especially by the early mid-30s and older Facebook crowd, along with "da bomb" which again, in my experience seems to be mostly used these days by Asians, and it just sounds retarded. Besides, try saying da bomb at the airport. I'm sure those who still use it will say we are all grandpas and grandmas who take issue with it.

So yeah, dope might have started in the '90s, but it really blew up and became trendy more recently. Thankfully, it's used less frequently. However, like most woke and unhinged folks these days, they're trying to re-invent language and separate it from its original meaning. And yes, unhinged is my favourite word these days! 😜

That's... Not what a fact is. And it goes back well before the 90s even. It was well mainstream by the 90s, and I'm surprised there's even a conversation about it in 2024. Although, I can see how in the white bread world of Canada that a lot of people missed the train on it by a few decades.

I grew up in a non-English speaking country and one of the nursery rhymes of course was "Pussy Cat".
It was not till I got here that I realized it means what we all know what it means. I was even more shocked after learning that when I saw these episodes of "Are You Being Served" where Mrs Slocombe keeps using it like, "I am late because I could not find my pussy".
