I believe that these practices are common among those who deal in high end commercial real estate.
There are assessed values and then there are the amounts that people end up paying. Sometimes they pay more than the assessed value, sometimes they pay less.
The assessed value at any given time is a number on a page.
As far as the IRS or insurance companies, they will get what they are legally entitled to get. Always

rolling-out a FREE vaccine to any who wish to protect themselves (along w/boosters and free testing)
2. Bi-partisan Infrastructure Bill
roads/bridges/rail/airports/high-speed internet/etc
3. CHIPs Act
building semi-conductors in US
4. Inflation Reduction Act
reduction in the cost of perscription drugs, climate change investment, reversing the 'gutting' of gov't agencies

Biden has erased tens of thousands of student loans. These loans were totally crooked and put students in debt for life.
Like investors I deal and listen too . Governments like to spend, not invest. And with respect.. I'm quite sure that'll be passed on elsewhere in the tax world somewhere in the USA. Someone has to pay for that? Nothing is for free in the governments eyes -- or plan of action. I certainly didn't have that option presented to me when I went to post high school.

Coming from a red tory point of view, I see the US as 3 camps. A third are left leaning, a third right and a third (maybe more) don't care. In a two party system, then its either right or left, no middle.
By the way, this is the same demographic that Hitler used where a third were devout followers (cult to the extreme). A third were considered the 'enemy' and so were victimized in the name of what they were doing to the cult. The other third just stood around and did nothing.

I wouldn't say I like writing off student debt. Going to school/university/college is an investment in that student's future; my children invested in their education and became doctors and engineers. That was their asset or investment in their future. Much the same as someone else's investment in their future would be from buying some other asset. I did go to university and obtained a degree. That was an investment in my future. I also took out loans and mortgages to buy property and other assets, which became the most significant investment and return for my future.
Should someone pay back my loans and mortgages for me? No.
Would be okay with writing off interest on student loans. Yes
It resembles the adage, 'If it is free, it is worth nothing.'

I think the current bubble/boom is largely due to low interest rates.
Allowing interest write offs would make prices go up. As more buyers become eligible the demand goes up.
Yes, if fraud is being committed, it should be dealt with by the appropriate legal authorities. Not the government.

If you are sold a lemon by a car dealership or you get scammed in some sort of bogus real estate transaction, I would feel bad for you but it wouldn't be MY problem.
Most people understand that the student loan "crises" is the result of some people borrowing too much money to get degrees that turn out to be useless.

I went to university and trade school. No loans. Worked and paid for everything myself.
A lot of this is on the government. They created the student loan system.
Now people want the government to fix it.

The interest write offs would be from personal home owners which would be filed under their own personal income tax forms at year end. Not sure how that could drive prices up?
Yes, the low interest environment definitely is the contribution to today's housing bubble. No doubt about that. But now, what's interesting is that rates have rocketed higher and yet housing prices haven't really fallen as much as many future home owners had hoped. It's declined a bit but not that much. At least not here in Metro Van. I hope our housing bubble don't experience what Japan had in the 80's.

That just takes money away from the truly needy--the banks, investment houses and auto makers.
