Stuck behind paywall unfortunately.

Nova Scotia sex worker takes client to small claims court over unpaid fee - The Globe and Mail

" Mr. Samuelson argues in his statement of defence that a contract for sexual services is not enforceable in law because it’s an illegal contract. Alternatively, if the court finds the contract is legal, Mr. Samuelson said he will argue that the services Ms. Sheehan agreed to were not performed. Mr. Samuelson directed a request for comment to his lawyer, who did not respond to The Globe. "

🤦‍♂️

Too bad the article stereotypes her with all the negative stereotypes about sex workers: poorly educated (she’s in school now), broken homes (divorced parents), poverty, working as an outreach worker (implying atonement for the error of her ways) etc.
Leave all that condescending shit out and treat her as a regular person. But it is the Globe.

Odd that she would spend such a long time with him without getting payment in advance. Was it a bad risk or was he a trusted reg who went bad?

She's also young, 23. Still a baby, bad judgemental Call, but this douche took advantage of someone at that age.

Absolutely!
Victim shaming is a shitty thing to do.
She may have made a mistake in trusting him, but he is 100% to blame for this.
Hope he gets a ton of bad karma.

Thing is him "buying sex" whether that gets down to the interpretation or not, is an offense. Her selling is not.
He might just end up being charged!
How's that for that bad karma!

This looks like a better article from CBC and no paywall.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova...small-claims-court-over-non-payment-1.6517196

This woman is doing a huge service for all sex workers. How do we support her and spread the word? I am going to contact the Elizabeth Fry Society at https://www.efrymns.ca/contact . It seems they are supporting her in the legal action.

In BC small claims now go to the Civil Resolution Tribunal. It's an online process. If any worker wants help with the process they can contact me by PM.

A correction for the above messages. Masterpoonhunter said "him "buying sex" ... is an offense. Her selling is not." This is incorrect. Both his purchase of services and her sale of services is a criminal offence.
Knowingly receiving any benefit from the provision of sexual services is a criminal offence. The worker is exempt from prosecution but has still commited a criminal offence. Harper deliberately criminalized both buyer and seller. He then conned the supporters of sex workers into believing he was not targeting sex workers by focusing on the exemption from prosecution and hiding their criminalization in the legal language. This makes it harder to fight the new laws.

Consent is conditional upon payment.
Non payment may mean no consent.
