I have a couple of good ones, both from when I was a kid. My parents got me a bicycle when I was 9 and living in California. They let me ride it around the apartment complex where we lived. It was my first taste of freedom and mobility, and I’ve loved getting on a bicycle ever since.

Second, after my first breakup at 16, my parents (yep, them again, almost like they know me or something) got me a set of juggling balls. I thought it was ridiculous but learning how to juggle really helped me focus my brain and make me feel like I was in control of something, and it was meditative and satisfying. It really helped me mentally.

Your turn!

Nintendo 64. We went on boxing day and got it for half price, so I was able to get an extra controller and some games. My mom kept saying my regular nintendo is fine I just needed more games lol

A bicycle for me too! Like Charlee said, that first sense of freedom and independence. It was early 80’s so a sweet BMX with mags. It was the same year or maybe year after Spielberg’s E.T, so I felt cool like one of those kids on their bikes.

Just had to think about my most memorable gifts, both as a kid and as an adult, and none ever were during the holidays. In fact I feel like the most thoughtless gifts I ever received were during the holidays. Damn, another thing I just realized on why I possibly get super anxious this time of the year.

Growing up I had never had pets as my parents were not animal people. A few years ago, my partner and I decided for Christmas we would head down to the shelter and adopt a kitten. It has far and away been the best Christmas "present" I have ever gotten even though I kind of got it for myself. Me and that little guy have been best buds ever since and adding a pet to my life has definitely enhanced my overall happiness.

Giving a pet as a present is not something I would consider to be a good idea as they tend to end up back in the shelters pretty often, but as a gift to yourself it definitely can be fantastic.

When I was maybe 7 or 8 years old my mom was raising me and my sister by herself with zero child support payments from my MIA father. My family never had a lot of money and while I loved Christmas as much as any other kid, it's not like she could afford to spoil us with presents. This year during the holidays she was on welfare and it sounded like Christmas was going to be even more minimal than usual. A mysterious benefactor approached my mom through a family friend and said they wanted to sponsor our family for Christmas, without identifying who they were. We submitted a wishlist and damn, did they ever deliver. The space under our tree was bursting with presents. I can't even remember what any of the gifts were specifically (this was almost 40 years ago), but we probably did three times as much unwrapping as we did any year before. I was probably a little too young to really appreciate it at the time but it sure means a lot to me now, and we still don't know who the secret Santa was. Shortly after that Christmas my mom found employment, went to school and ultimately entered an industry she's still happily working in.

My 4th birthday. It was during the time my family decided to have us living in Croatia. I received a big Lego set and it was the first time I saw Lego. I was completely confused by it at first and the next day I opened it and was loving it.

When I was 19 another aunt gifted me a bottle of a cologne that wasn't available in North America yet. Not going to say the brand, but for a year or two I was the only person I knew who had this scent before it became popular here. She also gifted me a fake rollex, with a note saying if I work hard I may end up with a real rollex. It was a good motivator during my youth.

When I was 6 my parents got me a huge lego set that was like 5000 pieces or so. It wasn't a fancy set like there are now but I thought it was the greatest thing on earth and for years after all I wanted for Christmas or birthday's was lego. I think my parents had as much fun with them as I did. I lost my mom this year and to help fill the empty hours I actually went out and bought a couple of large lego models. It has been a big help as well as reminding me of the time we spent together on our builds.

When I was at the age of doubting Santa, there was on toy I wanted, but never told anyone I wanted it, except Santa when I was getting my picture taken with him.
I was floored Christmas morning when it was under the tree.

BTW, it was a Hot Wheels Fat Track that had the electric cars, rather than gravity.
