Is the inclusion of "step" just a way to soften the idea of incest ?

Personally that's an instant turn-off. I find anything sounding remotely like incest to be disgusting and reprehensible. You're right, it's just "staged porn", but... why go there at all?!?!

I also find that about violence against women, even if they claim to be asking for it (yes, even spanking). That just doesn't do it for me.

I'm inclined to say "to each his own", but that isn't entirely acceptable. After all, I think we can agree that we're all against child porn. I'd be happy to extend that to incest.

The emphasis on "step" is already trying to downplay the taboo nature of the sex act by emphasizing that you and this person are not blood-related. The idea is it is not taboo to have sex with someone you are not blood-related.

According to pornhub's analysis, "step" is a popular search term not limited to the USA. I wonder if it's more popular in the southern states? But not popular outside of the anglosphere - barely a mention in Brazil and asian countries.

My educated guess, having worked in both film and erotica before:

I noticed that it first started getting really popular around the same time Game of Thrones got huge. The show had several incestuous relationships, people found the taboo to be a turn-on, so they started looking for incest porn. That trend then became "step-" in porn because (1) it's easier to conform to website standards if you can say "See? They're not REALLY related!", and (2) if you say they're step-family, you can get away with "relatives" not looking anything like each other (or being close in age for step-parent/child scenes).

The ones that crack me up are when the title is like "Hot Girl Fucks Her Step-Cousin's Boyfriend" or something. Like how many buffers do you really need between fantasy and reality?
