Are they reliable vehicles? Repair costs and gas? I'm looking at pre-2013 models because I like the look of them. Thanks

After renting a few, it is a fabulous car to drive, great fit and finish, but the gas it consumed was out of this world. A toyota RAV4 is a way better deal maintenance wise, gas wise, more space inside, not as nice as the Escape (more utilitarian plasticy vs. cozy, quieter, more refined feeling)
2.4 L engine takes that much gas? I'm trying to avoid Japanese cars if I can cuz I like the look of American cars but if there's no option available then Japanese it is
I wasn't in a 2.4 non-turbo, but 2.0 with Turboost. Lotsa power, but my leadfoot made it burn gas quick. It used far more gas than my old Toyota 2004 Chili 2.4L and it usually averaged 400km a tank full (55L / 15 gal).
I was quite impressed with the fuel economy of the Ford C-Max hybrid hatchback, so for a used SUV that is what I would shoot for, a Hybrid. As soon as this COVID nonsense is over, the gas is probably going to shoot right back past $1.50/ltr
The one I want is the 2021 Toyota plugin, it has 300hp and 50mile electric-only range with an overnight charge using just 120v outlet. The reviewer I watched said the plugin-hybrids they owned they only needed to fill up twice a year.
I've had mine for five years, it's a 2016 model so may not relate to what you are looking for. Very reliable ( 2 litre turbo). Regilar oil changes and that 's it. The battery quit and was replaced, no questions asked. Just one major downside - gas mileage is bloody awful, I get 17mpg regularly. Have talked to someone in Manitoba with a similar vehicle. They get 35mpg. I blame driving only in town, hills and traffic congestion. I don't have a heavy right foot. Given the number of tree-huggers and eco-nuts around here, how could our anti-car City Hall make traffic so bunged up and getting worse? You stagger from one red light to the next. If everybody is burning twice as much gas as they should, why is that such a brilliant idea?
Drove a 2004 for 10 years, went through 2 transmissions. 1 in warranty, the last one ended my ownership, cost more to fix than it was worth. Sold it to the mechanic cheap, he rebuilt it himself, still see it around from time to time. They were good before the redesign, now they are too small. Moved to an Edge, but when this one dies, I am done with Ford.
The first one was a warranty replacement, so zero, but the second, I could have paid 3500 for a rebuild or 5k+ for a replacement. The book value on it at that point was about a grand.
Edge ST and Edge Sport are terrific vehicles.

Should also add the the new Escape- the 2020 version - is larger than the one referenced as ‘redesign’ in an earlier post.
It's been better than the Escape, and it's a decent size at least, the new escapes are too small.
Yes can confirm Edge is larger than Escape.

The subaru forrester, the Rav4, Ford escape, small suv. Look at consumer reports for vehicles, it will tell you alot.
My criteria for a suv , it has to drive up the steep hill on the #5 hwy and pass every thing (ok most 4 cyl and the big trucks). This requires a 6 cylinder. It also helps with towing a ultility trailer. A 4 cylinder can only pull a very small trailer up that hill....

120v charging would be a game changer. Are they available now?
Two of my neighbours have Teslas, beautiful cars. Getting the charger on top of paying for the car is a deal breaker.
