I got into Stanford to complete both an undergraduate and a graduate degree (JD). I was not that brilliant, in fact I was not brilliant at all ......a couple of cuts above average.....just maybe reasonably bright.....but both the teaching and my fellow students made me far more intelligent coming out of college then coming in. And but for two tours of duty in South East Asia, I could never have dreamed of getting admitted to any top-ranked school let alone obtaining the financial assistance to finish two degrees.

At the end of the day, while the knowledge and analytical skills I obtained in the course of my studies were of great value to me both professionally and personally, the huge dividend I got going to a tier-one school was humility.

The teaching faculty was first rate in every way as were most of the other students; even the students who got in on the basis of something other than their academic achievements or intellectual abilities. Ironically, until I went to University I never realized how astoundingly ignorant I really was about most things outside a war zone and I still retain a compelling appreciation of my own ignorance and intellectual limitation.

All that said, there is a multitude of people out there that are far more intelligent and even knowledgeable than me who never stepped foot on a college campus; to their credit, they self-educated. I am not sure I could ever do that at least to any meaningful degree. The bottom line is I am not so much proud of my college education as I feel blessed in having the opportunity that I had.

It was truly like winning the lottery.

As a PostScript contributing to this forum has become an unintended therapy season for me as I am home alone on New Years Eve feeling sorry for myself. By throwing in my two cents, more out of boredom than anything else, I truly realize how lucky I am. On that basis I hope I provided some modest value to the discussion and to all the readers a happy and healthy new year.
A nice thoughtful post. Thanks.

Lots of us are alone on these special days. I've learned to make the most of it whenever I'm out. I extend myself to neighbors and other dog walkers.

To all, may you all have great health, prosperity and above all fun in the New Year :peace:

Great thoughts Ghostwalker. Although if the price of your lottery ticket was two tours in Southeast Asia, I'd guess that you earned that ticket.

Happy New Year to you!

I think the government should stop subsidising worthless degrees

In general post secondary education is a good thing. But the idea of the tax payer subsidizing courses like lesbian dance study is ridiculous. Also a real disservice to the person who wasted there time and money one a worthless education highlited once they enter the real world thinking they deserve $100k a year salerly

Likewise, but I have a job that pays a salary that’s not adequate to live on in Vancouver. Ironically I moved cities for it, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Do ANY jobs pay adequate enough to live alone in Vancouver? LoL I have friends in various fields there, mostly film and video game making, but ALL of them seem to have room mates still, even when married lol.

Indeed..then again we are falling far behind in academics against countries who have FREE post secondary education. I myself struggled through a BSc which had no real direction...I just felt it was the next thing to do in my life as many do. It wasn't I started taking shorter, more technical type programs that were more specific to my interests that a career (I've had a few already, red seal chef to aerospace engineering) began to take shape. All I learned in my early 20s at a University was how to pinch pennies until my next semester loan payment arrived....of which, any extra went directly to partying of course lol. Now, in my early 40's, I would love to go back to a University. Now that I actually have some experience to draw from and I can challenge concepts and ideas. Anyway...yeah college and university educated fledgling pooner here.

> I banged my French teacher a few years after getting out of high school......hmmmmm.

My Spanish 12 teacher was banging at least two of my
classmates. She was never reported because even girls liked her. She was cool and hot.

Sitting quiet on a Saturday night I just read thru this thread. Looking back, what a long strange trip it's been.

I started university in the 60's because I was useless at just about everything else in life except for an interest in sports and sex. Luckily I landed a girlfriend right away and got laid a lot that first year. I eventually completed a B Ed. from SFU with an accent on English and Social Sciences. I was a decent scholar, and still remember a lot of the learning experiences.

I gave up teaching after 3 years because I didn't think I was a good influence on kids. I bounced around, lived on Long Beach, went commercial fishing, built a few homes, travelled, had a sales job, and eventually got into the investment world.

I'm happy working in this free ranging field. I'm my own boss, I'm a natural born optimist and helper, and enjoy the chase It is certainly a place that draws on all my past experiences. With the advent of Twitter finance, the flattening and democratization of data and ideas, I can know everything that everyone else knows. It's a lot of fun, because I like a challenge, and it is a good fit for my temperament. And I am not tethered to a PC terminal/telephone.

I really respect people who lucked into their careers by following their instincts or were in the right place at the right time, be it construction, commercial fishing, physiotherapy, heli ski guide, lawyer, dentist, realtor, engineer, and these days, people who work in the digital realm. Doesn't matter what, as long as in the end, are you making a decent living, finding happiness and fulfillment. Discovering this hobby is a major bonus which backfills and feeds my continuing thirst for adventure. Not to mention health benefits, an underrated aspect.

You would like to talk about amortization rates, the difference between corporations and sole proprietorships and trial balance sheets?
Not hot. Not sexy at all. Boring really, useful but yawn.
