Time to replace my old, faithful and trusted car. I need a mid sized car for myself that can last me 10-12 years. I usually buy them brand new, I know that might make some people roll their eyes on me.

I am not into flashy cars. Basically I want a car that can score 4.9 out of 5 in reliability, has to be reasonably priced and does not cost an arm, a leg and my neck to repair and maintain.

A friend suggested I should consider Tesla Model 3. A bit pricier of course, but I was told I will save money in fuel. Also, it is still relatively new and I don't have time AND money to waste on an unproven car. Also, the wait is about six months.

So, do you know anyone who owns one? Any tips, warnings, advice?

Thanks.

Get a Prius if you are going that route.

So many on the road with hundred's of thousands of km's on them with an amazing service record.

Can you even get a Tesla 3 without a long wait?

Quit your day job and become a psychic BBB. :)

Prius is right on top of my list. My only concern with Prius, and Tesla 3 for that matter, is that can one recover the extra money spent with lesser fuel cost. A salesman was once telling me that he barely recovered his cost, more like he broke even and he drove a lot.

I was just talking to a Prius owner yesterday. $20 a week average cost of fuel and it's driven 3 hours every work day.

I think it depends if you are driving the Prius in economy mode.

This is why it's so rare to see Prius available for sale preowned.

I thought about the Tesla 3, but have given up on Tesla.

The delays in production are worrying, the burn rate of their cash it troubling, and the new, much higher price point is downright scary.

I'm not buying anything right now, but if I was, it would be Prius, or one of the other hybrids. All-electric still seems too early given limited range (despite what manufacturers claim) and lack of charging stations outside metropolitan areas.

If you can install a level 2 charger in your garage, then seriously consider Hyundai's plug in hybrid: The Ioniq. A friend purchased one in December and he absolutely loves it. Much quieter than the Prius and of course the Prius is not a plug in hybrid. Price is very competitive. I have driven it and it looks and feels like a regular car. I highly recommend it!

No, No Hyundai, EVER, never ever!!! Sorry. (Unless, I get one for free of course :), because then I will resell it and get a Honda or a Toyota.).

Seven, eight months is too short of time to judge a car, as far it's longevity is concerned, imho.

I have a few friends with Hyundais and they are sturdy reliable little cars.

Regarding electrics, Top Gear had a neat article about a BMW concept.
A plug in electric that charges via an induction pad on your garage floor. Plugless plug in.
The system has a guide on your GPS like a backup cam to position the car over the mat. No release date though.

I saw a video clip of a Tesla on fire on CNN yesterday, it was burning fiercely while parked on the street in LA. They seem to catch fire in disproportionate numbers compared to gasoline powered cars.

Not really IMO
That belonged to a celebrity, and it was a Tesla.
My doctor had a new Ford minivan catch fire on the highway. Nobody cared and it wasn't on CNN.

How many gasoline powered cars in the US? Maybe 50 million. How many Teslas? Magnitudes less than gas powered cars. Percentage wise I bet Teslas catch fire more often.

People are VERY happy with their Prius cars. In fact, people are very happy with their Hondas and Toyotas too, that's why there are fewer (preowned ) of them are available.

Priuses (Prieaae??) seem to last forever. That’s why cabbies use them.

Tesla just brought in 600 to BC. They are transferring deliveries to Canada to game the US subsidies. A friend up the street just took delivery and everything is good so far. I understand they had fit and finish problems at first but now it looks good now. The high end model that is shipping at present has a 500km range. Tesla is supposed to have the best battery packs.

If you can afford to have two cars on the road and one is a gas or hybrid, don't get another hybrid. You don't want the expense of an electric plus the maintenance of an old gas rig.

If you do a lot of solo commuter driving look at the SOLO by Electromeccanica. One seat, three wheels, https://electrameccanica.com/

The Smart for Two is great fun to drive but the suspension is VERY firm.

One of the developers I work for has been waiting 7.5 months on a new rear bumper after his p90 got hit on site... I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t be able to drive a car that long knowing it’s missing part of it’s bumper

Keep in mind that the advertised range of an electric is in ideal conditions. Turn on the heater or AC or the radio for that matter, and range will drop dramatically.

Look at the new 2018 Nissan Leaf EV. Good looking restyle and ton of performance improvements of over previous version.
