Starting to show up depending on your ISP DNS, backpage has been seized by a bunch of US three-letter agencies...

Official press release coming tonight by US department of justice. :twitch:

Look closely at the website.

Seems to me that this is NOT Backpage. Seems like some kind of prank or rather Spam to get people to call this number or click on the link.

Years ago, I had my computer "Seized" by CRA and RCMP together. Took a good rinsing with Anti Spam to get it out.

Not saying it's not legit, but when did the government start designing takedown pop ups that look like the work of hackers?

Edit to add: and they're having a press conference after hours on a Friday? Where? At the pub?

Postimg is just a screenshot posting site, with lots of crappy ads.

When I go to backpage all I'm seeing is the government notice with a bit of the backpage site around the red border.

We'll find out soon enough anyway, I'm just posting what I see in my browser...

The seizure notice showed up when I tried to log into my account
Many a time, the websites are hijacked by hackers. When you try to open them it leads you somewhere else. That's where the fake notices are??

Don't fall for it. I am sure Backpage will find out soon and get it fixed.

I had this issue with my computer where Yahoo would take me to Shaw's website. It went away for a while, but seems like it is back now!!

Marvels of technology!!!

Yeah that's what I was getting at. The superimposing of the notice over fragments of the page is a hacker's artistic flair, not something I'd expect a government agency to do. And based on the propagation delays you're mentioning it sounds like a DNS hijack, not an actual seizure.

Hopefully you're right!

Looks like a DNS hack. DNS is now pointing to ns1.seizedservers.com
If you go to seizedservers.com you get some sort of non-official looking message and after a couple minutes some bizarre video will play.

If backpages.com registrar account was hacked, it may take awhile for backpage to gain control again but they will eventually.

We just have to wait it out.

A quick bit of searching on the US Government Dept of Justice page and I can confirm that the media relations phone number listed in the seizure notice is legitimate. Any of the Canadian backpage links I've checked return a "server error" page. I think this may be for real. Has anyone actually tried calling the number or sending an email of inquiry to the listed email address?

Some said those new anti trafficking acts they just passed would lead to this. But it didn't take as long as I expected.

Some other website will take its place. Or Backpage will open up again with a .ru domain or something. That's what happens every time they take down a movie sharing site. The way of the internet. We'll just have to be patient.

I’m no longer getting error message when I go to backpages... it prompts me to the agree to rules page then says server timed out.. possibly a hack possibly not...

In the public service announcements, there is a thread about the Canadian backpage being taken down too .Apparently it is already banned in Ontario (adult services).
