I was reading the Vancouver Sun online and clicked on this article
http://vancouversun.com/entertainment/movies/canadian-womens-groups-call-for-fifty-shades-boycott/wcm/65d8a59a-432f-4f8d-b06d-c9029173a062

For those not predisposed to read it I'll just post this quote,

Some anti-domestic violence activists and anti-pornography activists — including Antipornography.org, the London Abused Women’s Centre in London, Ont., and the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan — are calling for a boycott of the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, arguing it promotes violence against women.
My first thought was "YES ... for the stupid or naive!"

But then I started to rethink it.
I've long held the belief that porn, in general, MAY be bad for some people as it can give a false representation of what AVERAGE sex is like. For the virtuous or uninitiated at any rate.

But I could never bring myself to support any organization that would actively work to dictate what someone else SHOULD believe or do.

What are your thoughts?

The only thing I've ever seen about this book/movie are ArmoredSkeptic and ShoeOnHead's review. They are not into it and actually talk a bit about how it's not BDSM, it's sexual harassment and they promote things that are actually dangerous (using zipties for bdsm). I'm for the discussion and the promotion of awareness surrounding this story. I'm against censorship though. We may not like it, but it has a right to exist.

I tried reading the book a while back also.
Easy to read, but boaring..and I could see that It was a rich guy with a problem who was stoking and harasing a nieve girl and basically sexually assaulting her. I figured the guy was pretty sick and seduced her into his fantasy. That does not make it ok..

I a guy gets seduced into a woman bdsm that different especially an old guy it's a choise for what ever his reason is.
In the book the girl was 21 or so and the guy was rich and
Had a sense of power ..Sound familiar to so many things
Being exposed right now in the entertainment business.

But your right I thought it strange that those are ok fantasy of women of all ages..
It seems it always has been.. from Casanova, Rudolf Valintino and Errol Flynn who were seducing or using women of all ages just because they were drawn to thier personality of the hero ,rouge.

Censorship is not something to mess around with when it comes to freedom of speech or expression. Where are those groups roots? Could they have a religious or political view that wants to start with movies like this or a cast a wider net?

I am super careful on social media when it comes to "likes" etc. I am not trustful of these sort of organizations at all.

I've never read the books and my ex GF started to, but kept muttering "Oh FFS!" every few pages until she threw it down in disgust. lol I trust her judgement.

As to the content you just have to know who it was aimed at. The bored housewife who reads "Harlequin Romances" or "bodice rippers" as they are called. They are looking for titillation not reality.

But, I too, find those types of organizations scary frankly. They want everyone to think as they do and diligently work towards that end.

Usually driven by extreme feminazis and religious types.

I agree, the popularity of 50 shades was almost certainly driven by the bored housewife and their “rape fantasy-taboo” desires.
People who actually practice BDSM know about SafeSaneConsensual and RiskAwareConsentingKink, the book and movies didn’t reflect the real kink world accurately.
It’s laughable when groups make press about boycotting a movie; the end result is more people are made aware of the film and it get promoted.

Yes, for a time I was a part of that world and I know it's permutations.

It should make it very successful ... and the husbands happy ... for one night anyway.

I just watched that movie today and found it very deep. Most of the comments above look only at one side but what I saw in that film was very different! It was about a young gal inexperienced in life but obviously she had a strong yearn for an attractive partner whom satisfied her unlearned physical needs. She was not reluctant to experiment but she was careful and established boundaries which her partner respected. She loved the physical act but tolerated some pain. She stopped when she realized it was unwanted. She clearly had the power. In the end the guy was diminished and dismissed. She went forth with no real material goods. She had her thing with him and that was it.

Amazing. I know a fifty year old gal going through a divorce right now who had no control, no respect, and no ability to set limits or do much else that this movie shows a woman doing. The movie is about female domination and control. You missed the point.

I’ll be calling my cougar friend in white rock. Been awhile since I’ve had that experience!

Well that will be a fabulous discussion! Perhaps your cougar friend could give her thoughts on this piece of fiction, & the books the author blatantly ripped off that give a much more honest portrayal of BDSM...particularly the BEAUTY trilogy by Anne Rice (of "Interview with the Vampire" and many many other fine works) under the pseudonym A.N. Roquelaire, as well as the French classic. The Story of O.

Apparently you are too young to have ever read, as Miss Erica pointed out, The Story of O.

I read it 30+ years ago. Try it. You'll probably see a resemblance. Don't worry ... it's a short read.

A classic.

Maybe try Autobiography of a Flea as well.
D.H. Lawrence?
Anais Nin?
Different aspects but interesting.
There is nothing new ...

EDIT: Miss Erica

" Later research has revealed that the author was a London lawyer of the time named Stanislas de Rhodes" ;)

"from members of this community for example"

I would agree ... from a purely body response\mechanical point of view. But maybe not from an emotional point of view.

Which I'm sure will get me an ass chewing from the Sp's but this (sp\client) is all, for the most part, fantasy.

I haven't read the "50 Shades" books, nor have I seen the movies. I have read some reviews, excerpts, and seen movie clips. I read a few pages of the "Grey" at a book store. None inspired enthusiasm. The book store read revealed poor writing.

I am an avid reader and a "wannabe" writer. So, I am curious just how the author, E.L. James, managed to make a lot of money out of a forgettable writing.

Any thoughts?

I don't think it's newatit's AGE so much as a sheltered past. He has at least a ear or two on me. Of course I read it before I ever went on my first date; same with 91/2 Weeks. .

Fair enough. Could you share with us some of your other erotic literary explorations? Perhaps I've missed some. Actually no doubt I have. Please share.

I didn't even know 9 1\2 weeks WAS a book but, to be fair to myself, I was busy with life I guess.

My "Go to" book as a precocious teen was "The Happy Hooker" by Xaviera Hollander. Many a "raw" night was "spent" with that book lol

No need to "boycot" this movie as I have no fucking interest at all in it.....takes something REALLY good to get me to go to a movie theatre these days with the crap that is churned out these days.Especially since I have a 60 inch HD screen at home.

Lord Of The Rings trilogy....yes I saw them as they were worth it and the same goes for the Hobbit Trilogy.
