People were camping out in Stanley Park in the sixties.
This is nothing new.

Ya, but that was nothing to do with being homeless....damned hippies were too stoned to find their way home....after whatever latest be-in they were at.

They did find their way to the Gulf Islands, bought very cheap land........started the organic movement there, and became millionaires, when the Billionares discovered it in the 90's.
I suppose they found their way there by accident, found themselves surrounded by water......shrugged their shoulders and just found it way to confusing to leave.

No there were people living in the wood there. Not hippies. I worked with construction labourers who lived in sleeping bags in the park. They carried everything they owned, which wasn't much, in backpacks to the jobsite.

SR-have not read your specific employment situation, but man you sure can rant over any public employee career. My guess is you either made a really poor choice years ago and regret it, or personally know people who work in the public sector and cannot stand them. Given the hundreds of thousands, or more likely several million public sector workers in our country that save lives, work extremely challenging jobs and many are very well educated to do so, you just seem like one incredibly bitter person toward good hard working conscientious people who you actually do NOT know. I really doubt the ER nurse at Royal Columbian, at the end of a 12hour shift with no breaks, chose that line of work based on the thought of a guaranteed retirement plan, IT comes with the job. Anyways, hope you still have enough time to change careers, or make the millions upon millions needed to have a happy retired life. BM
I am SELF EMPLOYED and I get PAID each day for what I GET DONE.At the same time I PROVIDE my own reliable vehicle and INSURE it as well as PAY for WCB.I get no pension other than CPP which I HAVE to pay into.I own my home and I pay property taxes and those have been going up year over year over year over year over year because EVERY year the UNIONIZED civic workers want a raise to inflation as well as a rise to their indexed to inflation pensions.....and this of course goes up the ladder via the food chain for Provincial workers and Federal workers.....year over year wanting more MONEY.....why not it is the TAX PAYER who pays for it.

At some point the fucking system just plain breaks DOWN because it is out of money....take a look at Greece as a good example FFS......that country is in the toilet and at the same time SWARMED with economic migrants that want to make it worse.

In our country Canada Post is a perfect example of Unions gone wrong whilst the actual provider of the system loses money.....when was the last time you mailed a letter? and did you do that on a weekly basis?.....yeah well if Canada Post had those volumes based on the population of the country it might be viable but it is not the case. Most people email or even text and they dont spend money on postage to pay the bills when they can do it online.

One of the biggest issues with the last Canada Post strike was about the "banking" of sick days.....they would get 15 a year and they could be "banked" meaning that when you hit your "golden handshake year" you would take your 8 weeks of paid vacation and work for 2 weeks and then go on "stress leave" for your "banked sick days" and then work 1-2 weeks and retire......at the TAX PAYERS expense.

I am against this on all levels be it Civic/Provincial/Federal because part in parcel those are MY tax dollars being ABUSED and at the same time I am being told that there is not enough for me at the end of the race....yet the pigs at the trough get to feed and feed and feed and at my expence.

There is not a SINGLE Private Sector Company in Canada that offers a "Defined benefit" pension.....Teck Resources/Transalta/Enbridge/Encana/Cenovus and on and on....most of them offer a "Defined Contribution" pension which is just and FAIR.....the only ones that offer a "Defined Benefit" pension is the Public sector and the PUBLIC pays for that and it is just not sustainable....take a look at the city of Detroit which declared bankruptcy.

In Calgary 65% of the operating costs go to Civic Workers.A total of the yearly budget goes to WAGES but at the same time that disclousure does not take into account the LEGACY costs of PENSIONS of retired workers who want thier pensions INDEXED to inflation year over year over year.

I grew up in Calgary and with a father who raised 3 sons as a single father and the ONE thing I NEVER heard my dad bitch about was year over year over year property tax increases as they did not happen back between 1976 and 1983.

Right now it is normal and at the same time shitty public services are the same.....that's what happens when unions feel entitled and filthy Socialism takes the tiller of society.

Socialism is the philosphy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. It's inherant nature is the equal sharing of misery......Sir Winston Churchill.

Yup....and it may be our undoing in this province.
I was talking to a " man" who had been on welfare for about a decade.....healthy, fit, and very entitled, and doing plenty of drugs in his spare time, which he had lots of.
He informed me that he wouldn't work for anything less than $25 an hour.....
When I informed him that in the real world you get a job, and work your way up the pay scale, so he was already 10 years behind.
He said " so what's the point?....ill just stay on welfare then"
The point I made to him ,was a pride in contributing, and finding yourself a better life.....and his response was " yeah but they'll just take it all away in taxes"
I said " yes.....to support morons like you"
See that is Socialism to the core.....the "have's" paying for the "have not's".My brother has been on welfare almost his entire life.I think he worked for about 1 year when he was 18 in Alberta doing seismic and he did a short stint at the Saddledome in some wage slave capacity and then went on welfare to fuck the dog and after a short period he found out there was no "free ride" in Alberta if you are a young fit employable male so he moved to the "Left Coast" and he has been on welfare in BC for close to 30 YEARS now and he has even managed to get disability welfare and during that time frame he has worked under the table for CASH.For the last 3 years or so he has not even been doing that as I am pretty sure he has been skimming all of the money from our fathers bank account that is left over after his home care expences have been paid.He has been married twice and has 2 children he does not support and he has never worked a hard day in his life and he is a DIE HARD supporter of the NDP who enable useless pricks like him who are essentially leaches on Society.

He is actually resentfull that I both purchased and paid off my current home(this being my 3rd home as an owner, the first being the starter and the 2nd being the doomed marital property) because I have worked really fucking HARD for the last 20 years.

Long story short my brother(middle brother) has been a dog fucker ALL of his life from when he was the age of 8 when he was supposed to wash dishes ALL the way along.Nothing but a LEACH upon Society and a DEVOUT Socialist with the mindset that Society OWES him without him ever CONTRIBUTING to Society.

To end this rant I will post my 2nd FAVE politicians quote about Socialism.

Socialism is great....until you run out of money!....Margaret Thatcher.
