Anybody ever get a speeding ticket on highway 1? I was in a rush today zipping along, and it occurred to me: I've never had a speeding ticket in a car on the highway. I'm a safe driver in general at whatever speed, and to be fair I rarely travel over 130kph and pretty much never over 140kph, so it's not like I'm a reckless maniac, but just the same, as frequently as I speed and over so many years... have I just been lucky?

About 15 years ago. It may well be the last speeding ticket I have received. I remember that it was not during rush hour and I was driving my brother-in-law to the airport. I doubt very much that they give speeding tickets during rush hour.

130 is usually about the norm for speed once you get past the PM bridge. Explain that to a cop though if
you get pulled over. He could give you a ticket for excessive speeding. 20-30 K's over the limit is
considered excessive, and they could nail and hide your ass to the wall.
It would not be a normal fine for a standard speeding ticket as you all probably know.

If he was a real DICK, he could charge you with street racing. Have fun dickering that out with the judge and the cop
if he shows up to your trial if you so request. Just a point of view from ten years ago as I had the Uhhhhh, pleasure?

The judge raked me over the coals preaching to me about having my insurance cancelled because I was allegedly
street racing and street racing in the mind of the powers to be instantly nullifies your insurance.

"But your honour I was not racing anybody". How do we know that the judge says? There were other cars
around you at the time of your arrest by the officer who said you were doing 190 at the time.

"Really folks, how could there be any other cars around me at the time when I'm going that fast? LOL!!

Me?....................UGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!
I need a lawyer.
If I had got caught up in a very bad crash, the judge goes on, if you would have survived.
You could have been serving time for convictions plus being sued for god knows what if others
were involved.

He Let me off cuz I never had a charge in my entire life and had a clean slate coming into court.
Told me to keep my racing to the Quarter mile when the track is open. Yes I had my machine out that
day to impose myself on my fellow man. Needed to burn off some winter dust on those BIG Tires.

To me, going about 110mph is like enjoying a nice walk on a sunny afternoon in the park.
I didn't dare say that to the judge as I'm sure he would not be amused.
Those were the days!!
The bastard scared the shit outta me and I guess he got his jollies for the day. But it worked!

I never did that again.

So in a word NEbad, We're both LUCKY!! LOL!!
Moral of the story ladies and gents to what it seems today. The cops have more important things to do so
simply put don't bring their attention upon yourself for unnecessary reasons. If the traffic is moving along
at say 120 keep up with them. Same as a fish in a school.

There is usually a dedicated highway patrol all along the major roads on the prairies. They will get calls to other incidents, but their man focus is highway speed and enforcement safety, meaning not much else to do. The "general rule" is 10% over to account for inaccuracy in their equipment and your speedometer. BTW, if you say your speedometer is out, they will make you get it tested and that fee is usually more than the fine and they may also charge you with operating an unsafe vehicle. I set the cruise on bald ass open prairie at 122 kph. I have overtaken and passed the RCMP and we have waved to each other, may as well wave, they had me if they wanted. It is an entirely different matter in a reduced speed zone, you better be close! As always, YMMV. It depends on that member on that day.

I was told by LE that most drivers who get a speeding ticket all think the same way: "I'm a safe driver". :heh:

When I was driving, I recall HWY 1 especially near Kensington and eastward typically was a favorite spot where the RCMP nabbed speeders. One can also report speeders to the RCMP by calling the RCMP at *17.
Does the caller also automatically get reported for distracted driving? :)

I have been travelling up and down on Hwy (aka backlane) 1 for decades. I feel there is less enforcement of speed for last 10-15 years. There was a time when it was common to see a mountie parked between those turnaround gaps but I can't even recall seeing one in months.

I don't intentionally speed (anymore) so it's been a while since I got a ticket. But going 10-15% over the posted limit seems pretty acceptable except school. playground and construction zones. Last time I got a ticket was for taking HOV exit at Grandview Hwy. I was late for my date with an SP and it weather was horrendous. At the last moment, my patience ran out so i took the HOV exit and sure enough .... VPD was waiting on the overpass. I explained to him that I just took it because I was very late so he did not give me any points, but I did get a ticket.

I think getting a speeding ticket is more about being at the wrong place at the wrong time. The real speeeders don't get as many tickets as common public going 20 kms over the limit.

The minute I crossed the border into Ontario that all changed. OPP everywhere.
Speed limit drops to 90. North Western Ontario is one big speed trap! And don't even think about speeding at night which you shouldn't do anyways. Too many big critters that blend in just around the next curve.

Hwy 1 East towards Hope going through the curves drops to 80 or 90, can't remember. Going from 120+ down to posted speed always catches someone. Myself included. It's a cash cow with a LEO waiting to take your $.

Minivan RCMP dark red colour is always working the HOV enforcement in both directions usually West of Gagliardi. I'm surprised how many think they can get away with it

West Van always has a car near the Horseshoe Bay exit. Speed is 50 km/hr. One cop has a reputation of seizing cars and apparaently an off duty RCMP got his seized too.

Hwy 1 between Hope and Spuzzum is 90.... Right along the run of Hwy that is gentle curves, no hills and is just made to do 125 Klms an hour, even hauling a fully loaded stock trailer.
Seizing cars has become rampant between Lytton and Clinton.....the holding yards are full with nice shiny sports cars from west of the Port Mann.

Problem with #1 (from Hope to Van) is that the highway is double lane both ways. Short merge and exit lanes. In congested traffic in the outside lane their are cars doing the speed limit and a lot of cars passing at 10 kph in the inside lane(passing lane) and just stay in that lane. That is frustrating, and I can see why some people weave in and out of lanes. Most people have forgotten the rule "Keep Right Except To Pass". Imagine your on an 2 lane highway (undivided), when you have to pass, you have to wait for a break in the opposing traffic (and proper yellow lines) or wait for a passing lane. You should pass the vehicle quickly (not at the moron pace of +10 kph over the vehicle you are passing). Think about the traffic behind you.
As for Northern Ontario, it's mostly 2 lane highway, inadequate passing lanes, people wanting to get from point A to point B as fast as possible, lots of accidents involving tractor trailers ( speed, loss of control, and 2nd party passing idiots). Hence the increased police presence. Not to mention every speed trap is a money trap!! It's a nice drive, lots of scenery.

the worst is the friggen semi's. you'll have one with a heavier load doing 100km/hr. with another behind who decides he wants to pass even though he's only going maybe 105km/hr at most. so the douchebag pulls into the left lane and ties it up with the slow pass. happens alot between abbotsford and chilliwack. more frustrating because the speed limit goes upto 110 at whatcom road, and the semis never hit that speed.

Highway speeds in Canada are stupidly low. There's nothing dangerous about driving at 130 kph on the HW. The posted limit in many states is 75-80 mph with the flow of traffic 20 mph higher. Canada thinks drivers are morons.

The thing I like about the highways in Oregon and Washington is it's a $10K fine for Semi's who pull that shit.

Not only a pain in the ass but friken dangerous especially in the winter.

Thanks everyone for your replies. So far not one person reporting having received a ticket in this area lately, so I guess I have my answer!

Also, all of you who are all, "EVERYONE says they're a safe driver" are all absolutely right, however in this instance maybe I should have clarified that I'm not simply a safe driver, but also a professional driver, and I don't mean taxis or semi trucks (although I do hold and use my class 1 frequently)

As a professional, I am able to appreciate fully & enjoy watching police vehicle maneuvers when I am lucky enough to encounter them, and I speculate that, while I do drive faster than 99% of the general population, LE are similarly able to "just tell" that I handle a vehicle differently than regular people. Given their specialized training, it seems reasonable to me that they could make this distinction, and ya I drive pretty fast and sometimes I move the vehicle around a bit. Keep in mind that I'm not a 20 year old in a Mustang, I'm a middle aged professional having fun at something I'm trained in and good at.

Anyways, THAT'S why I started this thread in the first place, because I drive pretty fast, and I imagine most would say kind of assertively as well. So with me driving as I do, which is to say say that I drive safely however I stick out like a sore thumb for moving pretty quickly, is my experience of not gettign tickets on HWY 1 everyone's experience? Or is my experience unique to those whom police are able to recognize are truly driving responsibly (however far out of the speed limit we may roam)? Turns out it everyone, I'm just an egomaniac lol.

LOL!! You must be either driving an Ambulance or are also LE driving an unmarked police vehicle.
My money's on the unmarked.

No wonder they would not pull you over to give you a ticket. I personally think the reason the judge let
me off 10 years ago is I told him I am a professional driver myself. He did say to me that was not a very
good way to make an example to other people and especially the officer who pulled you over.

Told him, no sir not that kind of professional driver I truly mean a "Professional driver" I then asked him if I may
approach the bench to show him my credentials.... Dropped my NHRA drivers license on his desk.
I loved the look on the face of the arresting officer. LOL!!
They must know something that I don't, but the judge was really cool. I think he was a muscle car era freak himself.

That's when he let me off and told me to keep it to the track when it opens and let me go.
No 20 yr something schmo in a Mustang here either NEbaD. :thumb: Welcome to the darkside my man.

Like I said, going 110mph to me is like a walk on a sunday afternoon in the park.
At the track I hit 110mph at the eighth mile. That's half way down the Quarter mile folks.
Anyone wanna guess what it is at the trap? That's the end of the Quarter mile.

It's MOTHA FUCKIN FAST!!!!!! :jaw:

No, mostly you are dangerous....but you guys keep thinking that. Please keep it off the roads. You may think you are safe and skilled but you don't know what the other driver is about to do, generally followed by death and mayhem.

Really....having an NHRA ticket makes you a "professional driver"...since when ? Last time I looked it meant you were a professional drag racer. Also last time I looked HWY 1 wasn't a drag strip. Then again what do I know about being a professional driver...I got my A License when I was 19....at the time it was the Class 1 of it's day and yes I have the air brake endorsement. Any tickets I ever got I beat in court with the cops there and any accidents I ever had that I was at fault for were deliberate...taking out an idiot with a pit maneuver falls into that category. I've seen 60 come and go and then some.....I still have that license, I still use it...I haven't failed a medical yet nor do I have any medial related restrictions. Want to Know something....over the years I've probably scrapped more "professional" drivers off the road and off their windshields then amateurs.

Has this become a bragging thread? Well I have to confess that I too am a professional driver and the last cop to pull me over said he could tell by the way I held the steering wheel.
When I appeared in court to contest the speeding charge I informed the judge about professional status. He asked for qualifications and I mentioned I had seen every episode of Dukes of Hazard and that I owned and autographed mug signed by Boss Hohh.
