Does anyone know where to get mirrored shutters or doors for a serving hatch?

If you aren't sure what a serving hatch is - it's the 'kitchen hole' .

I'm renovating my place, and would like to have the option of blocking off the kitchen if it isn't as tidy as I would like. Ideally I would love to have mirrored shutters facing the dining room because the area above the hatch is a mirror, and that would add to the continuity of the room, as well as create a larger and more open feel.

I haven't been successful in finding anything that fits this locally or online.

Call a glass place, they will make a custom mirror for you (or at least they will in Victoria!)

Go to a glass shop and have them make a mirrored shower door to fit the space. The Bi-fold panel is normally 12 inch, 15 inch or 18 inch so the door opening would be 48 inches, 60 inches or 72 inches.

BTW, you can get one way mirror and be able to see out of the kitchen, but not into the kitchen.

Get the edges of any custom cut mirror sealed. Otherwise, you will get a steady blackness growing between the layers of glass. Any moisture, humidity etc will over time cause this issue.

Hi Classy Angel,

as per your Question, i am a glass guy, and the one way mirror would only work if the light is off in the kitchen and very dark, otherwise you would see through it, it's called mirror pane. I don't think it is the look you are looking for. and it is very very expensive, and only comes as 6mm (1/4") thick.

also you don't need to seal the edges of the mirror, mirrors are made to be cut and stay sealed between the silver and the paint on the backside because it is baked on. the only thing that will cause a mirror to change color is to use the wrong glue to apply them, things like silicone's will eat through the paint and then throw the silver. so you need to use something like franklins adhesives to avoid that from happening, i would also suggest that you get the mirror pencil edged polished on the exposed edges if you have any, it looks way better than just a cut and sanded mirror.

and your reno guy should be able to build you bifold frame to the size needed then get the mirror installed on it.
