In most cases it's all about preventive maintenance.... making sure you don't wait till something else falls off before fixing or getting something fixed right away.
In my life experience ....I had no luck with Japanese cars.....found German cars to be over engineered and tool specific to do work on it yourself. ...
Hence this is why you have so many different makes on the road...... some people buy cars to show status.... some to follow a trend or fashion...some to compete with the Jones and others for practicality.
In the end every auto maker has had it shares of recalls ...and defects.... bottom line is.... what is your budget..... once you have established that.. then decide which vehicle will meet your needs and buy it.... always remember reliability is always based on usage.... some people are harder on their vehicles then some.... grandpa drives a Malibu which he has had for 10 years ... meanwhile his grandson used up 3 of them in the same time period.. just stating an example. ...

Let's not forget most of the "Japanese" cars are assembled in southern Ontario by laid off GM and Ford workers after they shifted production to Mexico. Mercedes are assembled in Alabama, insert "duelling banjo music" here! Whatever you buy its a crapshoot, I have a 2013 GMC Terrain and I haven't had any problems with it, a guy at work has the exact same car and has had nothing but problems.

I'm driving a "domestic". I'd be willing to go with a "Japanese" or "European" (probably German) car next time. As long as the machine does what I want it to do, and looks how I want it to look, it can be built on Mars for all I care.

The transmissions in the Honda Accords from 2003-2004 were dumpster fires. It was so bad that they had to do 1 million+ vehicle recall.
Toyota Out of Control Gas Pedal Recall ... (from Wikipedia)

"On October 10, 2012, Toyota announced a recall of 7.43 million vehicles (2.47 million in the US, 460,000 in Japan, 1.39 million in Europe, 3.11 million in other markets) worldwide.
In the US the recall affects MY 2005-2010 Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra and Sequoia as well as S cion xB and xD."

Every automaker has defect problems. There are so many "quiet" recalls as well that the general public don't know about.

Screw the Germans and the Japanese. There's a reason we kicked their asses in WWII.

Most of them are crooked liars (Volkswagen) or buying off politicians to get around trade deals (or get subsidized).

I've got over 300,000 miles on my Ford Ranger, and had almost as many on a GMC Sierra 1500. I'll buy USA any day.

So it is more about what happened in WW II ?

About a year and a half ago, I sold my beloved Summer toy, a 2010 Murcielago LP640 Coupe.
A couple of months later, I placed my order for a 2017 Audi R8 V10. A year later, I took the much anticipated delivery.
I'm getting old but the adrenaline of driving this new toy is quite exhilarating to say the least and I'll get more use of it than the previous toy.

Peace.

I am a pretty extreme car nut. I am currently driving my 22nd build since I was 14. I have driven everything, from amercan muscle to euro tuner. I am currently dabbling with japanese tuners and I am very impressed. Imho, you can't go wrong with a honda or toyota( especially an imported one ). They are the best bang for your buck, and so reliable. Not to mention, so much fun to drive, especially the all wheel drives.
My little beast has, safely, reliably and cheaply gotten me back an forth to work, etc for three years and yet can walk all over most any car worth under a 100k.

I have had imports numerous times.
But am back to North American vehicles, and very happy with them.

BMW 7 years old, bought new, no problems so far cheaper to run than my Honda or my Toyota's were except for the speeding tickets. I was worried it was going to cost me a bundle when the warranty ran out but I figured I own it, might as well drive it and no issues. No matter what car you buy, DON'T BUY A 1 YEAR OLD USED CAR. They are typically somebodies problem being passed along. Actually I wouldn't buy a used German/Luxury Japanese car less than 4 years old. If people won't keep them until at least the warranty period runs out, that is a red flag. Other than that go for a Kia or a Hyundai, cheap, well equipped, great warranty.

I drive a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox with awd and over 300 hp. Great bang for my buck. 81 months of free financing. It is a prety exceptional vehicle. Fast, handles decent and is great in the snow.
