If your thinking about buying a powerball ticket be aware that legally you can buy the ticket, bring it back to Canada but you can't bring it back to the US! Border gestapo agents can seize it as immoral material! Even if it's the winning ticket! Besides I'll be buying the winning ticket in Minnesota this afternoon!:pound:

In that immoral articles, at the bottom it does say that effective Jan 1 1993 that this section does not apply to any lottery tickets. Border guards just don't want a Canadian to win.

So the border patrol guy seizes your ticket, puts it in his pocket, and wins.
Hmmmm.

I think it probably ends up the property of the US Government. And of course, since the Customs Agent just covered his agency's budget for the year, the Customs Agent gets a promotion. They have most border crossings completely covered with cameras and microphones, so I don't think it would be possible for the Agent to pocket the ticket.

Ez. Before you leave the US, sign up for a mailbox account then mail it to yourself. Take a picture of it to check the numbers. Pick up your mail 3 days later.

Canadians, yes, you can win the Powerball lottery — here's how

Postmedia News January 12, 2016

So you want to cash in on Wednesday's $2 billion (Canadian) Powerball jackpot, the world's biggest ever draw. Here's what you need to know:

Can I play the Powerball lottery, even though I'm Canadian?

You bet you can. No citizenship required to win.

How do I buy a ticket?

Take a drive. The only way to legally purchase a Powerball ticket is from a licenced retailer. So while you don't have to be American to win, you have to be in the U.S. to buy your ticket. There are online operators who claim to buy tickets on your behalf, but Powerball warns against these unregulated services.

Be warned that an obscure American law prohibits you from returning to the U.S. with your lottery ticket. Powerball does allow winners to claim tickets by mail, but again, U.S. authorities would likely see that as importing a lottery ticket. Your best move may be to open a mailbox south of the border and stash your ticket in it, on the 1-in-292 million chance that you do win.

What kind of tax can I expect to pay if I win?

A winner would have the option of being paid through annual payments over 29 years or opting for one smaller cash payment (about $1.24 billion Canadian). Why the difference? The larger sum is based on inflation adjustments over the 29 year period, so really this is a draw for the lesser amount. The bigger number draws more eyeballs, so that's why the organizers go with it.

Canada doesn't tax lottery jackpots. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has a special tax just for gambling wins: 25 per cent for citizens, but 30 per cent for us non-Americans. Some states collect income tax on lottery winnings but B.C.'s closest neighbour, Washington, does not.

So what does that leave me with?

Even with 30% knocked off, you'll still end up with $980 million U.S. over annual payments, so you're not likely going to starve. Also consider, with the dollar where it is right now, that actually amounts to about $1.4 billion in Canadian dollars. So if you think of it like that, it might cushion the blow.

Can I buy an NHL team?

Yes. The Carolina Hurricanes are for sale and owner Peter Karmanos has said publicly he thinks the team is worth $400 million U.S. That's about $569 million Canadian.

Is gambling not fun anymore?

The B.C. government has gambling addiction help line. More details here at bcresponsiblegambling.ca.

This story has been edited to add information about U.S. laws regarding the importation of lottery tickets.

This touches on the topic. Not sure if it would work with Powerball

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/12/0...-won-over-internet-by-man-living-in-iraq.html
Actually, I'd love to know the name of the online lottery seller. They informed him that he won, kept the ticket in the US for him and arranged for him to pick up the winning ticket. Contrast that to what happened in Ontario when a store stole the ticket when the customer tried to validate it. I have a feeling that if they didn't steal the Iraqi's ticket they wouldn't steal a powerball ticket.

I went to the site that was linked in a linked new article. It's thelotter.com Right now, the site says that it's over loaded with Powerball customers and to try again later.

There are videos on youtube of US lottery dealers getting caught scamming customers.
The customers are really lottery inspectors. Ooops !!

Good thing I buried my ticket in a plastic baggie a few miles across the border. I figure if I don't win, some farmer in Linden is gonna unearth the baggie in the spring time and think it might be worth something :) If I do win, I am gonna be shttng my pants hoping no one found it.

Back when I was going to SFU got a summer job on Annacis Island for the summer at a factory. A guy working there just won the BC49 right before I started. Everyone was so happy for him cause he was supposedly going to be in the NHL but something happened to his eye.
He bought a new Camaro and house and quit work. Got drunk and died smashing into a telephone poll a month later.
