This poor ship shall sail again

LADY-VIA

GOODMORNING LADIES AND GENTS, I have a boat and I would very much appreciate some tips or help on where I should turn to in order to help get her all fixed up again as she is in rough shape but i think with a little care she will look fabulous...

So since I was a little girl I have always love sailboats, and Ive been collecting I guess you would call them models ? statues ? I dont know just boats.. I have quite a few now and recently I picked up a couple more.

I went to the flea market on terminal avenue a couple weekends ago, a trip I very much enjoyed as I love antiques, or treasures as I call them, and I frequent garage sales and diferent flea markets looking for theses treasures.. This is something I grew up doing since I was a little girl with my parents and still very much appreciate this history behind all the items I pick up..

At the flea market I ended up chatting with this remarkable 90 year old lady, who you would never in you wildest dreams believe she was actually 90 at all, seriously I was shocked.. I actually asked her what her secret was, and if it was all the " sex, drugs and rock and roll " :) She got little smirky smile and her face and said it was lots of number 1.

I find elderly people so delightful to talk to as they have lived through so much and I really enjoy hearing their stories.. So clearlly I struck gold and found the perfect table at the flea market as she was actually the original owner of all of the items on her table. I was drawn to her & wanted to know all the stories behind the items, so there I stayed and hovered for quite some time and picked up a few things from her including, a very old carving knife set she said was from the 40s and one of her purses that actually has the date on it from the 50s, and I picked up a sail boat..

I believe this sail boat is brass ?? or possibly copper ? Im not completely sure and Im tying to wrack my brain and remember what my parents told me as this is the first larger brass/copper piece I have picked up on my own, but can I shine it up ? or is it better to leave it as is ? I think I might give it to them as I know they would reallly like it too and Im sure ill get it back one day :)

Ive got cups and candle holders and other randoms in storage but i think this boat is really pretty and it should be on a mantle or something ..

SO THATS THE STORY BEHIND BOAT NUMBER ONE

I will add the photo here after as I need to upload it off my phone..

Now on to boat number two. There isnt much of a story behind her besides the fact that I went for a walk late one evening, and I found her in a back alley, clearly waiting for the garbage man, or her next chapter in life.. I coulnt belive my eyes as it was such a sad sight... The sail boat is quite large and solid wood. I can picture what she might have looked like at one time, and I think shes beautiful, so obviously I took her home and out of the threatening rain that was called for that night.. Who ever put her in the alley also put the broken pieces in a zip lock bag so my guess is that the owner was hoping someone like me would find her and want to restore her which is exaclty what I plan on doing.. Problem ?? no clue where to start..

The sailboat is on a stand, although there is nothing in writing anywhere so I don't now how old it is or anything.. and Im guessing a hobby store might be able to give me some information, a speciallty hobby store???? I realize its going to take a bit of work, but Im excited about the outcome once shes done.

I will post photos in a minute

any advice would be nice, or if you have seen one of the second boats and know anything about it, I would love to hear what you know ;)

thank you

ps -- the cob webs have be cleaned off of her.. i thook those pictures when I first brought her home... She's had a nice wipe down clean, but sandly sits broken. My guess is she was in a garage or some storage place that had moisture as it looks like the wood and paint have a bit of moisture damage, be that the very least of the problems here..

oh ok thats a good place to refference for other similar boats... this one is failry large... the wood pole ( ha ha wood pole ) for the sails in the middle well when I stand beside it the peak top of it reaches to my belly button. Ill need to dig out my measureing tape but its got to be over two feet long as well.

The first boat may be bronze and copper combination...If it's done from bronze sheeting it will have a brown patina...If it's done from copper sheet it will have green patina around the joints where the metal meets another soldered piece.
It's probably a combination of both.
The wood one may be a kit that you glue and pin together at home...Or could be hand built, piece by piece.
Are the spindles on the railing irregular ,or do they match perfect when compared to one another? You can usually tell if it's hand built when you compare the joinery work.

If it's copper clean it, if it's brass or bronze leave it be...the patina is what adds to it's charm. The wooden boat looks like a hand built project as opposed to a kit. Looks like a model of one the Columbus vessels.

thanks guys .. im going to try a few things now and check out a few sites.. I also dont think the boat was a kit as its really quite big and actually heavy as well it just seems like theres a fair amount of weight on it to be a kit as in the wood feels solid and not partical board stuff.. :) the thing as well with this boat is that I dont know when Ill have the time myself to even work on it for a while... so Im also curious to know if there is somewhere I can take it in to be restored, and I would glady pay to have it done.

Looks like the Santa Maria.....the larger of the Columbus ships. Actually looks like not much has to be done to it.....

I have built stuff like that my whole life. Absolutely enjoyable and a relaxing time.
I would love to help you but it would be next to impossible to explain to the wife! Lol
Use some ingenuity here, gentleman1963. Do you have a buddy that could be a go-between? Lady Via could post an ad on kijiji in the "hobbies, crafts" section and you could respond to it. The occupation of the advertiser would be totally unimportant, unless you were looking at a barter arrangement.

I've never known a girl named Pinta...But a Sioux Girl named Pinto ,stabbed me in the left ass cheek with a boot knife....It seems Pierre ,your theory has some foundation.
And Yah,...I never saw it coming, but it left a cool scar. I just wish the story had a more noble tone to it.
