Let's discuss ladies and gentlemen the best workout tips! I'll start things off (as starting out is always the hardest part) with some of my 'secret' advice:

-always keep well hydrated before hitting the gym...don't rely on just drinking tons of water before the workout
-don't eat anything that may require you to take a 10 minute pit-stop in the washroom
-workout with a buddy if possible...having someone to spot you while you workout can be beneficial safety and motivationally
-sweat, sweat, sweat...if you're not sweating then you need to workout harder.
-slow and controlled reps are key for muscle building. don't worry if the young, fit, stud next to you is pushing twice of what you're lifting. keep focused on you.
-post workout meals are key. healthy sources of protein and leafy greens.
-no chitter chatter that involves talking about what you could lift 5-10 yrs ago or the "6-pack of abs" that you used-to-have.

Thanks agentwhite!! This one is right up my alley!!

* post-workout protein needs to be ingested within 30 min of the end of your workout
* the only competition is yourself - track your progress and celebrate your achievements
* set easily achievable goals at first to build self-confidence - then start pushing
* Mondays are key, they set the tone for your week
* create your own emotional triggers to get yourself motivated and ready to dominate before hitting the gym. That can be a video, a song, a photo...
* give yourself plenty of time to see results if you are out of shape - you didn't get there overnight, you won't look like a stud overnight and that's fine
* 4 weeks for you to see results, 8 weeks for your significant other, 12 weeks for anyone else - stay committed and DON'T STOP
* do it for the right reasons: to be fit, healthy, strong and happy ;)

Most importantly, have fun!!!

Be consistent. Someone who does Starting Strength 5x5 for eight weeks and never misses a set will do fine. Guys who bust their ass once a week never get anywhere.

Diet is about 75% of the battle. Cut back on empty carbs. Go to iifym and learn how to eat. She helped me lose fifty pounds in two years.

I really enjoy going to the gym. Except for a period in the 90's when I was doing a lot of rock climbing, I've been a pretty regular gym goer. In the past 6 months though, I've become more consistent. This is what works for me (keep in mind that I'm in my late 40's):

-at my age, the biggest key for me is keeping the reps at 12 to 15. If I do heavier weights at lower reps, I always run into joint issues.
-be consistent. Find a routine that works for you and that you enjoy, otherwise it is hard to be consistent.
-for me, 4 days a week with a 2 workout split (chest, shoulders, triceps and legs, back, biceps) seems to be working well. I do abs each workout as well
-make sure you incorporate some basic strength lifts in your routine. I think squats and bench press should be incorporated.
-I prefer training alone since it give me flexibility as to when I go to the gym
-I find music is a must
-keep a log of each workout, this way you can see how consistent you've been and also what weight you're lifting
-I weigh myself every week
-I have a protein drink after every workout (they sure taste a lot better than they did in the late 80's)
-I also take a pre-workout drink before each workout - these have a lot of caffeine and other things in them, so start out slowly to see how they affect you

Well ...I will say , good for you guys that you keep in shape. I don't work out ,or have a gym membership....I don't even own a pair of running shoes.
I'll just say...on the eighth day God ,made a farmer, and I just don't have the time to workout.
I'm told by some, that I don't need too, but we do have a few things in common.
My protein drink has caffeine in it.
My weight lifting routine works out all my muscle groups, but includes two pieces of equipment called Hay Hooks.
I always sweat during my workout, in particular when I'm in my tenth hour of stacking the hay in the haywagon, bent over shoeing horses, peeling rails, driving nails...you get the idea.
Oh.. and my chit chat about my six pack abs never comes up...because I'd just be talking to myself.
I have often wondered what it would be like to go to a gym, and pay to lift heavy things...But I do respect what your doing to keep healthy, and in shape. But by the end of August ,there are times I wish I could do what you guys are doing.

People in an urban setting don't often get the exercise at their jobs that we do sybian. I always appreciate anyone who takes care of themselves.
Some good points here.
I would add that i have trouble staying motivated in a gym, doing the same things over and over. So i have found hiring a personal trainer helped me. Not just for motivation, technique, game plans ect but someone to answer to. If your paying and someone's waiting for you your not likely going to flake.
If anyone has any tips for us ectomorphs who are interested in gaining weight i'm all ears.

Hey Hank,

Speaking from personal experience I was a very heavy set guy in my early teens talking 250+ although I'm quite tall. At the end of my senior year, with a ton of hard work and effort, I was down to just over 160. Now I was very happy with what I achieved but the problem now that I was too skinny lol. So my friend, who is very knowledgeable about nutrition and supplements, recommended an easily available supplement called CREATINE. I am telling you taking this supplementation is one of the best decisions I've made interms of my fitness goals. Its main function is to restore ATP levels in the body or in simpler terms, help you recover faster in between sets while also lifting heavier weights. BUT alot of bodybuilders and even beginners use creatine because it stores water in the muscle tissue. Why is this good??? Well after two weeks of using this supplement I was blown away by how much fuller and defined my muscles were. I truly have never experienced such a rapid body transformation is such a short amount of time. I love this stuff and if used correctly it will gain you the weight but the added benefit is that it will go directly to your muscles.

One thing I must add is that IF you decide to try this stuff it is important to cycle it monthly. I do 3 weeks on (everday 1 scoop) and 1-2 weeks off. It's important that you MUST also go to the gym and train. Results are not going to pop out of the air, you must lift weights for the results to show. I've been complimented many times on my physique and there is no better feeling knowing how far I have come.

Best of luck and any questions feel free to shoot me a message or post a reply here :thumb:

BTW heres a link to one of my favorite Youtubers... hilarious and informative

You're supposed to take creatine everyday atleast 5g because it is something your body processes fairly Quickly. If you are just starting to take it, take 10g a day for atleast a week to saturate your muscles and get the proper effect. Also there is no such thing as anabolic period after working out.

There is 5 grams in my weight gainer shake i take immediately after and sometimes for breakfast.
Unfortunately my body didn't respond like yours. No visual or measurable difference in 6 weeks.
My guys/girls say no need to cycle either.

Ah sorry to hear that... Make sure to be drinking plenty of water to replenish muscle tissue and working out consistently... It worked for me and all my friends who have tried it but I guess it varies from person to person. Good luck on your journey and keep pushing. Get friends or join a club to motivate and push you to workout as often as possible aswell, nothing like gym buddies lol
