Police in eastern India are searching for a group of six men who gang-raped an elderly nun in West Bengal.

The men ransacked the convent school in Ranaghat early on Saturday morning and stole money before entering the convent itself.

The 74-year-old nun is now recovering in hospital.

Christian groups have recently held protests in the Indian capital, Delhi, saying they are being targeted and demanding better protection.

The Archbishop of Calcutta, Thomas d'Souza, told the BBC that security cameras inside the Convent of Jesus and Mary School show the faces of the six men who carried out the assault.

They first ransacked the school principal's office and classrooms before entering the convent itself.

"There are only three Sisters in the community," he said.

"One sister was molested badly. The other two, and a guard, were tied to chairs."

The men also stole money from the school, he said, vandalised the chapel, broke open the tabernacle and took away the ciborium, the sacred vessel used during Mass.

The school is well-known and has been open for 19 years, he added.

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has condemned the incident.

The attack comes at a time of growing concern about sexual violence against women and there has been increased media reporting of rapes and assaults.

The background to this attack is not yet clear. But Christian groups elsewhere in India have expressed concern that they are increasingly being targeted.

Some highlight a series of recent attacks by vandals on churches in Delhi and call on the authorities to do more to protect them.

I don't think there's a bottom to their depravity. Unfortunately it seems it's a cultural thing - at least in some areas. They place blame essentially on the woman for her circumstance in these situations. It's ridiculous.

I think the media attention on this will help push the country towards more respect for women. I can only assume many of their society won't actually care, but will follow rule as their leaders don't want the world to continue casting them in such a dark light. It's a slow change, but hopefully it eventually hits home at how sick things are.

While things like this, especially when they seem to be a symptom of particular segment of this society's views/treatment of women in general, is sickening. At least over there, when they catch them, they'll hang and never have the chance to do it again.
Here they would get 5-8 years and then be set free into society to re-offend.

Plus India is a very litigious place, with a full and very enthusiastic upholding of British legal traditions (read: more lawyers than you can shake a stick at, long trials with lots of attention to technicalities)

by that i mean most marriages are arranged by the parents. i have read of cases where the bride and groom have not even met once before the actual marriage ceremony

that night, the bride is expected to spread her legs and submit to whatever passes for wedding night sex with the groom. imagine, a young virgin who possibly doesn't even understand the concept of a penis entering a vagina, submitting to forcible sex, almost certainly without lubrication of any kind

I muted the video when I watched it. so yeah the guy holding the camera is a dick. and I only posted it because you said you liked animals too much to call rapists animals. Not because you said they didn't rape.
