I got home from The Rio about an hour ago from watching this:

It wasn't quite what I thought it was going to be. I was expecting it to be more along the lines of one of their live burlesque shows. They did have a male "clown" burlesque performer open the show. He was actually quite engaging and put on a fun, quick show. After that, the participants were actually chosen from audience volunteers. And since this was apparently the second time they've done this, the returning winner was there as well to defend her championship. Overall, it was actually a lot of fun.

Luckily, the cute little bumble bee from the poster was there :D

Tomorrow night's Late Night Movie will be Spice World featuring a "drag shadow cast". In case anyone is interested:

La Belle Pêche Nue at the Rio Theatre
by STAFF on JUN 18, 2014 at 10:03 AM

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, for one night only, leading burlesque performers and producers Melody Mangler and Lola Frost present La Belle Pêche Nue—a nude revue that’s all about the elegant ooh la la.

The Lovely Naked Peach, as it translates in the Anglo-Saxon tongue, is on-stage at the Rio Theatre this Saturday (June 21) and features the pair of artistes plus Roxi D’Lite from beautiful Windsor, Ontario, all of whom have gained top honours at the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.

Another poster and a more detailed description :D

La Belle Pêche Nue - A Nude Revue

On June 21st, Canada's most renowned burlesque performers will doff their pasties and g-strings and appear in all their glory, fully nude, for the most stunning striptease show Vancouver has seen since the Neo Burlesque Revival!

La Belle Pêche Nue presents striptease in an amalgamation of high-art theatrics, sensuality and grace, aiming to challenge conceptions surrounding contemporary burlesque standards of never revealing all.

Inspired and intrigued by the romance of the body in its naked form, producers Lola Frost and Melody Mangler carefully curated a show steeped in such highbrow concepts as dance and theater, then combined it with striptease, commonly viewed as lowbrow - thus creating a powerful potion for beauty, intrigue and excitement!

La Belle Pêche Nue will take burlesque on a romantic waltz for a night, side step the formula we know, and bring in a sense of ferocious strength and dazzling vulnerability to both the audience and the performers.

A sensual striptease sensation not to be missed!

Headlining -
Roxi D'Lite!
Reigning Queen of Burlesque, Burlesque Hall of Fame 2010, Voted "Top 5" Burlesque Performers 3 years running (21st Century Burlesque Magazine) and "20 Hottest Burlesque Stars" in the world. (Aslyum.com)

Staring -
Lola Frost
2nd Runner Up Reigning Queen of Burlesque, Burlesque Hall of Fame 2012

Oh my goodness why am I in Victoria this weekend, I freaking love the Spice Girls, and I love drag just as much. That sounds fantastic! Can someone go for me so I can live vicariously through them??

Burlesque is also fabulous, my old dance studio performed with a burlesque troupe (we didn't strip), and it was one of my most favorite performances ever.

The Rio is so much fun.

From the minds that brought you Star Wars: A Nude Hope! It’s a Vegas-style spectacular meeting a beloved pop culture classic to create delicious, naughty alchemy.
Geekenders is back with a brand new grownup reinvention of a classic film about a young girl who finds herself in a fantastical world for a journey of sexual discovery, eighties glam rockers and sequined goblins.
Featuring a cast of twenty-one of Canada’s nerdlesque glitterati, the “cult sensation” (Vancity Buzz) is creating bigger sets, fancier costumes, more elaborate dances and greater thetricality than Vancouver has seen from the troupe before, to take the 1986 Jim Henson classic about growing up, sexuality, and making hard choices and turning all those themes up to eleven.

To be honest, I was never all that into Labyrinth anyway (despite being a fan of Bowie and all things Henson in those days).

Battle Royale - Friday at Midnight

I have not yet seen this one but I've heard a lot of good things about it. I noticed that it has recently been added to NetFlix and I have added it to "My Que / My List" so I'll probably just watch this one on NetFlix. But I can imagine that a Midnight show of this might be interesting...

Battle Royale
Join us at the Rio on Friday, November 14 for a late night screening of Kinji Fukasaku’s modern cult-classic BATTLE ROYALE, starring Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, and Tarô Yamamoto.

Friday November 14
Doors 11:30pm /Movie 11:59pm
Tickets $6 advance (or costume) / $8 door
19+ only; 2 pieces of ID required.

In the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary “Battle Royale” act.

The summary from the following youtube page:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMOCEF4n_zs

At the dawn of the new millennium, Japan is in a state of near-collapse. Unemployemnt is at an all-time high, and violence amongst the nation's youth is spiralling out of control. With school children boycotting their lessons and physically abusing their teachers, a beleagured and near-defeated government decides to introduce a radical new measure: the Battle Royale Act. Overseen by a former teacher, Kitano ('Beat' Takeshi), and requiring that a randomly chosen school class be taken to a deserted island and forced to fight each other to the death, the Act dictates that only one pupil be allowed to survive the punishment. He or she will return, not as the victor, but as the ultimate proof of the lengths to which the government are prepared to go to curb the tide of juvenile disobediance. Likened to Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange by many critics, this explosive film shocked a nation with its violent portrayal of a society in ruins.
