What great news!

And in a link to another article on the same page has Dennis Hof talking about starting up brothels in Montreal, Toronto, Vancovuer and <strike>Calgary</strike> Halifax. Halifax!?!

And it looks like Alberta is going to continue harassing clients. Sometimes I am ashamed to admit I grew up in said province.

I'm pretty sure this is all PR for Dennis Hof for this houses in Nevada.
couple years ago when I took a vacation to Vegas, I decided to visit one of his brothels. during the long drive, I got to talking to the driver, talking about prostitution in Canada/US/Hof etc and he said that Hof has no plans to expand into Canada despite all the news articles/interviews that were popping up at the time saying that he was and it was all PR.
he's spending a lot of money buying and renovating houses in Nevada, if he was to come to Canada, it's probably not going to be for a while.
besides why go to a "Bunny Ranch North" when there's a CLUB 78 closer to me who apparently doesn't take half a girls earnings.

Some "prostitutes" really treat customers like shit. So it is reasonable and moral to not prosecute in one perspective. That's reality and morale in the mix! So that reality is correct.

Reading the news about the feds, the impression I got is there not about to roll out the white flag,

They intend to bring out legislation sooner rather then latter, and I don't think its going to be that good.

Even I understand whats coming out of b.c there not giving up they are going case by case, and I think they would still go after some high profile things like bawdy houses and pimps.

No, not bawdy houses and pimps. Those items are covered by the Supreme Court ruling. But yes, to prosecute folks peddling under-age and using coercion, as they rightly should.

Under aged, trafficked or dealing in drugs as well. Someone once told me the way an agency gets taken down is by either A) disgruntled ex-employee vB) Disgruntled neighbour 3) Disgruntled former client. So the more complaints a place receives the more likely they are to become a target for LE.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
our police chief is the president of the canadian association of police chiefs. after the enforcement gong show that took place out east, i wrote to him requesting he reach out to other police forces and explain what we did in vancouver and our sex work enforcement policy and guidelines.

they said they were happy to do that and seem to have been working hard to bring others police departments on side!!

it is indeed good news! we have some powerful allies. i am going to make the same appeal to the mayor and council who unanimously adopted the sex work task force recommendations just before xmas.

i hope that this combined with the other work we are doing will make the difference in the long run and we can prevent a disaster and recriminalization under the nordic friggin model...

good work emily!! i emailed all of them too!!

love susie

I don't think anything will influence what will happen this year. Our federal government has its mind made up, and it is going to do what it is going to do. They are not known for listening to other ideas generally, and specifically for not taking harm reduction policies seriously.

Thanks a lot, Canada, for giving them a majority to do what they want.

Targeting Liberals and NDP with information is a good policy, though, in the chance that the next government will be different. Perhaps they will not obstruct the inevitable new Supreme Court challenge to the new laws once enforcement begins.

Targeting local police forces also seems like a great idea. They have a certain ability for selective enforcement of federal laws. Not so much for those areas policed by the RCMP once they are directed to enforce new legislation. And good luck with jurisdictions like Calgary.

The best chance of all is electing anybody but Conservatives in the next Federal election.

I admired Jack Layton for his sincerity, although I have never voted for the federal NDP.
I am admittedly centre-left. Unfortunately, we don't have party of like in BC.

But Layton was so stupid when the somewhat inept Paul Martin was Prime Minister.

Sure, there was the "sponsorship" scandal, but Martin was clear of it and it was prior to him anyway. He also set in motion an inquiry into the affair.
At the time, the Liberals were a minority government, propped up by the NDP who were getting some of what they wanted as a result.
With the scandal, Layton got greedy, and tried to force the Liberals to pass legislation too much to the left. Martin had no choice but to call for a vote of confidence.
For sure, by voting with the Conservatives to bring down the Liberal government, Layton guaranteed a Harper government. No chance of NDP forming one.

Now, we've had Harper after Harper governments. Killing democracy by muzzling, destroying information, and stonewalling. Ah, the list of bad government goes on and on.
Decriminalizing prostitution is a difficult pill for the government to swallow, even though civic regulation would help to ensure safety, health, off-the-streets, tax dollars.
Putting aside the obviously unacceptable trafficked, coerced, drugged, etc. arrangements, by far most paid sex is a consensual matter, service for money, and the woman is mistress of her body.

The feds have big brother control fixed in their minds, with an antiquated morality. I don't expect much from the other parties, either. This new law will go to the Supreme Court again.... needlessly.
