Isn't that what lions do? Eat other animals? Although I would have thought they would prefer to catch their own fresh meat.

To us city dwellers it probably sounds gruesome, but if you have grown up on a farm where chickens or larger livestock get slaughtered on a regular basis for food, it probably isn't as gruesome. And anyway, many of the cartoons on television are probably more violent that this.

My impression on reading through this article was that this move was well-thought out with other options considered first, and publicized, so parents weren't unaware that the 'show of the day' would be the slaughter of a giraffe and feeding of it to the lions. Parents had a choice in this matter as to whether they kids got to witness it or not. I do have mixed feelings about the morality of zoos, but they do serve an important purpose, even though the animals inside them are outside of their natural habitat. Pity they couldn't all be like the 'Night Safari' in Singapore, though I wouldn't be surprised if there are even problems with that one.

Honestly, I cannot believe CBC showed the footage. It was not what I was expecting. It really should have come with a disclaimer. What impression might that have on a young child?

Now, that is different where parents don't have much warning of what is coming up (or may not even be in the room). I trust the footage was innocuous.

If you do not mind seeing lions tear into the belly flesh of a baby giraffe while the reporter talks about all the efforts that went to save the giraffes life. Oh and all before lunch.

Might be worth a letter to the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, though I'm not sure they will hold up the complaint. Probably nothing different from what you could see on the Discovery Channel.

Let's be honest these are the kinds of kids that will probably do well in life. Their parents have them at a zoo learning something on a Sunday morning when lots of parents are still sleeping off Saturdays booze. The kids have a pretty clear understanding that meat doesn't come in 1 pound packages on styrofoam wrapped in cellophane. I love that folks that hate that an animal was killed want to try to put nightmares and horror on kids that were there to see exactly that. Don't try to jam your morals onto other parent's kids. There are lots of kids that were home playing video games, who do you think learned more today?
