5 years to parole, a slap on the wrist for sex murder. What a shame. He should get 25 years mandatory with no parole eligibility until 2/3 of sentence, and be designated a dangerous offender (for having done this 3 times).
Agreed, however the DO designation is not applied lightly, and given his age at the time of the crime there is still some small hope of rehabilitation. Whether or not he has a serious mental imbalance and impulse control issues is another issue entirely.

The DO designation is more often sought after for the most violent of offenders that have a repeated pattern of behaviour, and for which there is little if no hope for rehabilitation. If applied it would allow them to keep him incarcerated indefinitely. For public safety reasons.

But unfortunately, unless he is a serious risk to re-offend, or does go out and harms someone else it's unlikely that designation would ever be assigned to him. The system doesn't take action until after something has happened, it's reactive, not so much proactive. Imagine if we lived in a world like "Minority Report" where crime was eliminated before it happened...if you haven't watched the movie it's good for nothing else than stimulating social debate on whether it is just to punish someone for a crime they have not yet committed.

Okay, so the judge enforces the maximum sentence, understanding that the prisoner may apply for parole earlier. Whether he receives parole or not is whole 'nother story.
They say the boy was "anxious" around girls and this is part of the reasons for his crimes!?!?!? HA!

Anxiety/nervousness/fear/flight

He has planned it repeatedly and done it repeatedly . Maybe they can "rehabilitate" him since they got him so young, one can only hope and only time will tell.

Public executions in BC place , with bar and bbq's ......throw these fukkers in the ring and chase them around with big wheel trucks.
give the fans stun guns to shoot at them when they get too close to the fence .
it cost sooooo much to keep these scumbags in prison and why ever let them out. do i really think this guy will be rehabilitated? and he gets out in a few years and walks in the same park where our kids are playing....fuk that....lets bring back public execution.
So lets make money on executing them , charge 100 bucks to come to the event and have a full card. save the worst assholes for last for the finale'.

i've been biting my tongue after posting the op, but i will ask this, is it possible with the dna testing techniques that we have now that there are almost no more cases of false conviction?

In fact, federal prisons differ greatly in terms of discipline and order required as well as privileges allowed, "mercyshooter", but that's not what I was referring to in my short comment. Sex crimes by men, both the sexually violent and pedophiliac offenders, against females are dealt with very harshly by the other inmates. As a result, this young offender will likely be placed in solitary confinement for his own protection. Being cooped up 23 and 1/2 hours per day by oneself is an extraordinarily hard way to spend one's lifetime. In addition, he will be eighteen years of age when he hits the penetentiary and, if placed in an open ward, he would end up being fodder for the older predators, many of whom are extraordinarily mean.

Please don't get me wrong. I was just trying to describe and now detail what his life will be like. Personally, I think people who commit such horrendous crimes should be put to death. Studies indicate that the death sentence does not decrease instances of violent crime but I am for it for another reason. The relatives and loved ones of the victims most often want and need this assurance in order to help terminate (some) of their own pain. By taking punishment out of the hands of the family and clan and handing it over to an impersonal and reputedly civilizing "state", punishment then takes on a very antiseptic quality which barely assists the suffering of the people left behind.

Have you looked at the photos of the brand new fed prison in TO?

Wow that kind of thinking really scares me.
I do not know the state of DNA Testing.
I do know that it would be amiss to think that our justice system and the process that produces convictions for capital crimes is beyond reproach.
yeah, i guess never assume anything to be perfect
