What classic movie can you not stand?

I've watched godfather for the first time this year. I just hated the entire movie and couldnt stand it. Rewatched star wars and Return of the Jedi and thought it was crap.

The thing you always have to keep in mind with every older movie is that it may seem overdone, cheesy, or predictable now, but you have to put it into the context of the times. It was usually among the first of its kind. You enjoy it a lot more that way, because you know it was what inspired all the movies after it.

Plus, with classics, you essentially know the whole storyline already and many of the best scenes because they're referenced all the time, and unfortunately that does take away from how powerful the movie is. That being said, if you look past that, and focus on everything the movie truly is you can still get just as much enjoyment out of it.

Star Wars and Return of the Jedi I've never seen so I can't comment on that lol.

WHAT???!! That's one of my favourite crime movies. I could get into a very long theoretical debate on all the many reasons The Godfather is an amazing movie. It's just a quality film. But to each their own...even though I think you're nuts

Yes was surprised to see someone list The Godfather as one of their least-liked classics. In my opinion, one of the all time great movies, and the 1st sequel (Godfather II) almost equally so. An amazingly well acted movie that shows the fall from "grace" that a man can have (Michael Corleone / Al Pacino); the scene where Michael has to kill the mobsters in the restaurant was an amazing piece of acting, and I think cemented Pacino's legacy as one of the all time greats (not that he hasn't had some stumbles along the way heheh). I've lived in Little Italy areas of Toronto and Vancouver, and I can confidently say Brando's portrayal of the old Don was pretty damned accurate based on how the neighborhood padrones carried themselves....

Or wait.. I'm not THAT old... maybe all the "old dons" of my old neighbourhoods just parroted Brando Either way, if it was good enough for them, he obviously played the role well.

for its time Star WArs was one of the best sF movies made .. Alien Was a lot better.. But that said .. With Star Warts we saw the ending first Then we saw the beginning which was not done well at all ..The story sucked and the acting was on par for kids i like adult SF nudity and sex and some big revelation about the universe and every thing With Star Wars Once we knew about the force .. well that was it .. any one with the force will win.

Is there a classic movie which everyone and their dog seems to love, yet you can't stand? For me it's The Graduate. Parts of it are funny, and yes Dustin Hoffman is great as always, but (spoiler alert) no woman in their right mind would EVER date a guy who fucked her mother behind her back lol. I'm willing to put up with some unrealistic aspects of a movie, but this was just ridiculous lol. Yet it's supposedly one of the best movies ever! It won awards!

How about you? What movie do you dislike and you think everybody is out of their minds for liking?

Although The Graduate was not a Great movie, it was ground breaking for that time in history. I still smile whenever its on because a sort of similar thing happened to me. I had broken up with my first girl friend after going out for two almost three years. She had moved away and I bumped into her divorced 38 year old mom one day. I was 21 at the time and talk about a great apprenticeship. I think every 21 year old should be so fortunate.

I can't believe the great movies that people don't like at all??

actually any thing with science ideas and theories in it is SF does not have to even be in space .. Star wars has lot of science idea in it .. The death star is base on the Dyson's sphere , often used in SF stories . As for i see people living on other planets in a Galaxy far far away , with other alien .. It is SF.

There are very few original stories , we all way will see all life from the point of our human religions , myths and values... Life is a stage and we are players upon it .

I would call some thing like Arther C Clark ' 2001 a space Odyssey and " Destination moon" directed by George Pal to be more future documentaries that ask some fundamental questions about humanity

Nope... The Death Star was not a Dyson's sphere. A Dyson Sphere's principal feature is that it encompasses a star in order to harvest the vast amounts of energy it generates. There was no star at the center of the DS.

Well said. Many classics lose some of their power when we watch them thirty, forty, fifty, sixty years after their release with our 21st century eyes because we've already seen them referenced so many times in pop culture and/or have seen dozens of contemporary movies that were inspired by this original masterpiece. Because we've seen the movie referenced so many times by the time we watch the original, it can be hard to experience the classic movie itself. Our eyes may be open when we watch it but our vision is clouded by all the references and cheap imitations that the classic inspired.

I also agree that there are some great movies that are great in many ways but also cheesy, predictable or dated.

But The Godfather? Come on now. I would humbly suggest that if you don't like The Godfather you don't like movies. (Or drama for that matter.) It is as fresh and amazing today as the day they shot it. (And edited it, re-edited it, edited some more...)

On a side note. Violet have you watched The Long Good Friday? It's a classic british gangster movie from the same era. I'm not sure if its as good as The Godfather but it's close.

Yeah, fantastic flick as well. The two British Gangster movies I like the most are this one and The Krays, which I guess is coming up on classic status since it is (gulp) 22 years old now. I saw The Krays 1st run when it came out, in Plymouth of all places, and just loved the gritty texture of the movie.

Excellent movie!! Bob Hoskins is fantastic!! I would also suggest "Gangster #1" if you like British gangster films.

I just like SF because I watch movies and read to escape from reality not get deluged by it Good SF does . give the viewer ot reader something to think about and some good visuals weather on screen or in prose

Yep, I remember that episode of ST:TNG. The whole concept seems incredibly unlikely because the size of the sphere would have to be massive (The Earth is 149,600,000 km away from the Sun so the diameter of the sphere would have to be probably at least that size.)

Star Trek > Star Wars

Do the Lord of the Rings films count as a classic movies yet? If so I'll give a pass to the first movie but the rest were terrible and suck almost as bad as Star Wars.

Everybody seems to love Audrey Hepburn. I do not and find her movies as enjoyable as a root canal. Roman Holiday has to be the worst with Breakfast at Tiffany's a close second. Alfred Hitchcock is another one. To be fair, I don't hate his work entirely and while he may have contributed to the manner in which movies are filmed (cinematography), the movies themselves are mediocre at best. Take The Birds. That movie was more funny than anything. They're birds for christ's sake, just get a giant seed bell

i'm a big kubrick fan, but really didn't like that movie. it gets rave reviews, but i felt it was pointless. whereas a clockwork orange, 2001: a space oddessey, the shining, and full-metal jacket were epic.

Dr Strangelove is my favourite movie. Clockwork Orange I had no use for.

Sorry, Violet, but if it mattered to Katherine Ross, ... that's all that matters. I think she and Julie Christie were probably the two most incredibly lovely female actors of their time, ... and Julie Christie still looks good in her Sixties.
