New to the town and want to check out the #1ranked North American Asian food Vancouver has to offer. I am partial to dim sum and non traditional japanese. Would love to hear about your favorites...

Any asian restaurant where the clients are non-white, means the food is decent...:pound:

There is excellent dim dum at Floata downtown, and their prices are quite reasonable.
Hmmmm, there's a delicacy I've yet to try...dim dum (how could your spellcheck not catch that one?!)... :)

Meanwhile, are you considering traditional Chinese food too? If so, I eat at this place where there are a lot of Asian diners, so I think that's a good sign. It's on Boundary, near Canada Way. When I find the name, I'll come back and edit my post to include it...

OK, I've got it (thanks to the perb member for reminding me): Burnaby Palace Chinese Restaurant.

Bon Appetit!

I have to agree with teejay69. Phnom Penh is real good. For dim sum any Kirin would be good.

If you're into japanese, but want to get away from sushi/sashimi/teriyaki, try one of the myriad izakayas.

http://guu-izakaya.com/

http://hapaizakaya.com/

Mind you, the izakayas do tend to be more expensive than the typical sushi joints around town.

If you're into malaysian cuisine

Chinese cuisine can be a little tricky because so many of the restaurants here cater to chinese clientele, meaning there can be a language barrier (both with the serving staff, and with poorly translated menus). Most of the chinese restos downtown are a decent option (because of they are accustomed to serving non-chinese patrons)

Kirin restaurant on Alberni street
Imperial chinese restaurant on Burrard
Victoria chinese restaurant on Melville

Lin chinese on West Broadway

If you want value, Hon's wonton house (Robon street, chinatown, new westminster or coquitlam).

I really love Congee and I have been going to the Congee Noodle House at Main and Broadway for a number of years. The rest of the menu is extensive and anything I have tried has been good, It opens at 8am and closes after midnight and is almost always busy with a predominately Asian clientele..

Hon's has gone downtown for the past 12 months. New ownership for these restaurants and the quality is poor. I won't go back

Thanks everybody for your amazing tips. I look forward to checking them out. So far from my side I've tried:

Dim Sum- Kirin, Sun Sui Wah, Northern Delicacy and Red Star Seafood Restaurant. All were pretty good. None were in a class of their own
Mixed Asian- Peaceful Restaurant Make sure you try the beef peaceful roll. Nice!!
Japanese- a few standard ones but went to Kingyo and it was one of the best Japanese food experiences I ever had. Lots of interesting tapas styled options. The food was amazing. It's in the West End and I highly recommend it.

So I will try some of the suggestions you all added. Thanks again and may your condom never break. :)

I tried it and I was totally disgusted. Indian and Chinese food do not mix. It's like mixing Thai food with Greek. The flavours just do not complement each other. I mean really - sweet and sour with curry on top? BLECH

Best dim sum is out in richmond..sea harbour, jade, fisherman's terrace etc so many. In vancouver, it's more expensive/less creative but try red star, kirin, sun sui wah; western lake for good value & dai tung for dim sum on the cheap.

For non-traditional japanese, lots of izakaya choices..the guu's are my fav/more japanese; kingyo & suika have a korean influence and the hapa's are white man/vancouver style. Miku is another option, too fusiony/tacky for me but otherwise popular as they're taking over the old goldfish location in yaletown.

For non-traditional chinese dinner, bao bei in chinatown or try an hk style cafe..western/asian fusion + bubble teas + open late + lots of young asian girls: copa, gloucester, corner 23 etc.

Bon appetit & itadakimasu!
